alright here is a little scoop on the car. i just bought a 96 tsi awd with 88k on the clock for 1500 dollars. the transmission was locked up and i just reinstalled the transmission. im not familiar with the 2nd gen like i am with the 1st gens and have NO CLUE if i disconnected anything that could effect starting while installing the transmission.

i have a brand new optima red top in the car and im sure the battery terminals are nice and tight. im using a test light to see if im getting power to the starter solenode and when i turn the key im not getting any power. i replaced the starter relay thinking it was the problem with no help. the starter is nice and grounded and i cant think of anything else that could be causing the problem.

another thing that might help is the fact the car sat for 2 years untouched. any help would be appreciated.

thanks in advance
david

Have you checked the ignition switch? Check and see if you're getting power to the actual starter. If your starter has 12 volts, then I'd look into the ignition switch being faulty.

I know this may sound dumb but is the MAF pluged in? I forgot to plug mine in before and car would not start. Is there any mods done to this car??

Sorry disregard this I read your post wrong ha but i would double check that.

Do this, we had this issue on 2 2nd gens that we ran. There is a plug for the starter that is by the tranny or along the firewall. When the plug gets old it sometimes comes loose. I would check that.

its running hks vpc gcc. it will be replaced shortly with the link.

Seems like you found the problem. However, you may want to try a multi-mete instead and see if you are getting anything at all.

if you read further you will see that i KNOW the starter isnt getting any voltage. my question is what are some commong problems with 2nd gens to cause the starter to not get any power?

are you talking about the plug that runs to the solenoid? because if it is this is what i unplug to check to see if i was getting voltage.

also if the ignition was bad wouldnt their be no voltage to anything else? like my stero, turbo timer, power windows?

this kinda just hit me like a fart in the wind. whenever i take the keys out the turbo timer doesnt turbo time. i know this plugs into the ignition system. you guys think the turbo timer could be messing this all up?

man not to jack the thread but thats the exact same prob im having..i woke up tried to start the car and it was like the battery was dead. I couldnt jump it. then friday night i try to start it, the interior lights worked but it still wouldnt start. when i turn the key nothing all i hear is fluttering under the dash. i close the hood and give it one more try and it turns on like nothing was wrong. i dont get it. i thought it could be the ignition switch..but like stated before it was like my battery was drained. nothing worked. coinsidentaly this happened right after a long storm which i wasnt driving..but maybe the condensation affected something.. im afraid to drive and it not start.

I have had and fixed this issue on many 2G and 3si, and the problem I have had is either the signal from the ingnition switch to the MFI relay is bad or the wire from the relay to the starter is going bad. Both easy fixes. This should give you a little direction David. Let me know if I can help. (This issue us also why I have a push button for the starter as I got tired of replacing the ignition switch)

Oh yeah......Happy BDAY!!! It was fun but that movie was stupid!

Have you checked the battery cable from the battery to the starter. They sometimes go bad, and need to be replaced. That wire everyone mentioned connecting to the starter could be your problem, but if your not getting any power to the starter, first thing that makes sense would be to check your power supply.

Damn, mr. defiant. i was hoping you would give me a little more credit then that LOL

anyways got the car started. it wasnt the smartest thing to do but it worked. i hardwired the starter from the battery to a push button in the car back to the starter. she started right up.
