St. Catharines,
Hey i recently had my transmission rebuilt with ipt rebuild kit, shift kit and high stall torque converter. since the tranny was rebuilt i find it drops down into gear very hard when im coming to a stop. It does it more as the car heats up. I also find sometimes when i first start the car and go to leave the transmission wont go into gear. But if i turn it off then back on, it will be fine. any ideas, possibly tcu?

Solution
I have a couple post on the ongoing transmission problems I've been having with my 97 Talon TSi auto.

Today I talked to IPT and i think we have figured out the problem. I bought a new engine for the car before I installed the rebuilt transmission. But the crank was from a manual and the pilot bearing depth wasn't long enough to mate the engine and tranny. So I took the pilot bearing out and machined it through. After doing that the transmission mated and seemed to have no problems. But apparently there is a specific auto pilot bearing that's suppose to go there, so the torque converter has prob floated and crushed the pump causing my problems.

I will be getting the proper bearing and get the transmission pulled.
In the rebuild kit there are two spring choices for shift firmnest, a black for stock style and a red for harsher shifts..Sounds like you have the red..Its more evident on downshifts....
Take your TCU apart and see if anything is bleeding in there...

i have the red spring in. And no it is not the shift kit causing this, this is def a prob with the transmission, only when dropping into first gear it does it. very harsh. Sometimes when i first start the car and put it into drive, the transmission doesnt engage. If i turn it off then turn it back on then its fine. WTF this is pissing me off so much. Should i just take it to a tranny shop and get them to read the tcu to see if their are any codes?

I brought it to my tranny shop and they were trying to find the ECU jack to do a diagnostic. Where the hell is it, I do not see it anywhere under the dash? Anyone have a pic of it.?
The internet says its on the left under the dash, but apparently mine doesn't have one.

its there just take a close look there might be a piece of black rubber over it. also you might need to move the carpet to find it

i see you have a 1g, it is prob not in the same location as the 2g the internet says its on the left under the dash, i do not see it anywhere

There should be two ports. One is for the ECU and the other for the the TCU. Take a closer look. If not you might have to take out the kick panel and trace the wires a bit. And to clarify it a bit. It's underneath the driver's side dash next to the center console.

ok heres my problem, when i first start the car sometimes when i put it into reverse it doesnt engage, but if i turn the car off and on acouple times then it will engage. Also first 10mins of driving or so it wont shift out of 3rd, it will go one two 3rd, but wont go into 4th. Then eventually it will shift normal. Also when coming to a stop the car binds and drags down and clunks. from 1st to 2nd. does this sound like electrical to anyone? how can i check if its my tcu, two shops tried reading it and couldn't.

also transmission is fully rebuilt with ipt overhaul kit, shift kit, and high stall torque converter. transmission has like 5000k on it, any ideas like its becoming very annoying to drive.

Sounds like you need to take it back to the shop to check out your transmission. Hopefully you still have warranty from the rebuild.

will a awd tcu work in a fwd. i phoned the dealer and they said they didnt really see a difference between them. Well i just swapped to awd tcu and the car will not go into gear.

You may have received a bad TCU. If it feels like it is stuck in 3rd gear, then the TCU is not working properly. I would also check your fuses. There is a 10 amp fuse that controls the TCU. I cannot remember off the top of my head which one it is. You can also try resetting your battery for 2 minutes. Disconnect your negative cable, turn your headlights on, wait for 2 minutes, turn your headlights off, then reconnect the battery. I had a TCU problem a long time ago and it fixed my issue till the TCU went completely dead.

It will work to get you around but kill your wide open throttle shifts. It will shift earlier due to the awd tranny having shorter gears. In easier terms if the car shifted at 7k rpm while racing it will shift around 6k.

WHAT about the other way around

fwd tcu in an awd car?

On 1g cars, a TCU is either 3 plug or two plug; 91- early 92 are three plug, late 92- 94 are two plug...ANY 3 plug dsm tcu will work on a three plug harness..The same goes for two plug TCUs in a two plug harness..Doesn't matter if its FWD, AWD, 2.0 non-turbo, or 1.8 non-turbo...When it shifts is the only difference between them...
I have tried all 4 versions in my 93 awd, and they all work...

Same problem here, 6k on my tranny since rebuild though. It's been happening for the past 5k miles and i've almost given up on this and just went for a manual swap LOL. So far when it won't engage into gear 3 things will eventually get it into gear, sometimes it's random orders though. 1st is wiggling the shifter around if that doesn't work i turn the steering wheel sharply back and forth, and finally i turn the car off and on. The first is simply shifter cable needs adjusted im just not looking forward to shoving my big hand in that tiny space atm, and the last two i think are both related to the ignition switch? I'm just not exactly sure whether or not the I/S is one of those that won't let the tranny engage if it is giving off a signal that the cars not in the on position or something like that. Have you ever noticed that when the car does engage and you try to go you hear the parking brakes squeal? i've only heard that once from my car but im almost certain it's Ignition switch, just waiting til payday to get it checked for good.
