I bought a tranny from somebody here and was assured the tranny was good. But that's neither here nor there. Initially there was no reverse, so my mechanic takes it apart, and we find out that the tranny had been flooded. It was full of water. The internals looked good, no major damage. So he cleans up everything and puts it back together. Now the car wont completely go forward or reverse. When it is in Drive, I have give a lot of RPM's before it catches. Thy mechanic thinks thetranny is bad. Any ideas?

sounds like its a bad clutch solenoid. easy to replace. i had this problem with my old 1993 it wouldnt move untill it hit about 3 grand and it felt like it had really no bite at all. upon transmission tear down there waas no abnormal wearing of any of the components and the band was still at OEM spec of pad thickness. i replaced the solenoids and it shifted like new again.

the previous owner left the dipstick out of the tube and he went puddle hopping with it. the transmission was almost 1/2 full of water when i bought it from him. parts cleaner bin and some walnut shell from my sandblaster and it was good for reassembaly. here are the parts you need to get the transmission fixed and working again. this is the same kit i baught and put in and it never had a problem again and its still working to this day with my old 1993's new owner as a daily driver.

Man thanks. This is clearly the problem with most mechanic shops. The have no access to replacement parts like this. The mentality is to tear down and rebuild, or replace. Here, all of the usual transmission parts vendors charge $1000 for another tranny, that's if they have one. This car has been a labor of love, and I haven't driven one mile in it since I bought it last June and rebuilt the motor.

no problem man. just dont buy a cheap kit from autozone or something like that because its almost guarenteed to fail like mine did. i mean ya its a little pricy at $225 but with oem quality you cant beat. to pay $225 to fix the transmission is way better than $1000.

i installed my kit while the transmission was still in the car. remove the pan and the sensors are easy to access without removing a crap load of stuff to get them out just a very few fasteners and pull them out. i have pictures if you are interested. just pm me and i will send them to you asap.

I am trying to get my tsi goin, but the tranny is not immediately engaging. When I put the car in drive, I dont feel the tranny go into gear. I have to rev up the RPM's to about 3-4k before it will start to move. The same thing happens when it is in Reverse. What seems to be my problem?

Sounds like limp mode to me. My 1993 auto had that problem. I replaced the TCU and cleaned all the connections on the trans. It might also be the cylenoids in the transmission its self. Run an OBD test on your DSM and post what codes you get back if any are there.
