2g Tranny Into 1g?

I been there, done that, got the t-shirt. I ran a TRE 2g trans for over a year and I never did get it to shift just right. I even swapped the 2 link arms on the transmisson (hell) and it was still notchy and sometimes wouldnt shift in high rpms.

I known own a 1g shep and it's amazing how a 1g transmission works in a a 1g car. :thumb:

I should work just fine. We put a Shep stage four 2G tranny into a 1991 GSX. Car ran great and never had issues well above 8000rpm. Literally took it out of the 2G and put it in the 1G and ran the car. Not to say that others have not had issues, but for us things worked great. Out of a 95 straight into a 91. I recommend using the matching transfer case though. Or matching the 95-96 tranny with 95-96 transfer case and same for the 97-99's.

What did you do for the trans mount on top of the tranny?

Also, any changes for cables/shifter?

Wedid swap over the tranny mount. Shifter cables had no issues there. It is recommended to swap over the shift forks, but we had no issues.

Mount... so it was a total bolt in? Which mount did you use? Both pieces (unibody side and trans side) of the mount from the 2G? or one piece 1g, one 2g?

Some may get lucky with it, but I did a new clutch assembly (fix worn parts) , new clutch fork, new shift cables, new slave and master, switched the shift arms (put 1g arms on the 2g) and switched the bracket that hold the shift arms to the transmission

I wanted it work, but I guess I wasn't one of the lucky ones. My shep 1g works like a champ though.

We used all the 1G mounts. For the install the is. Just swapped the mount on the top of the tranny over to the 1G mount.

I had a buddy part out his 2g and he had a TRE Built tranny so i thought i would try it out in my 1g. Everything seemed to go together fine it just didnt shift all that great... I have herd of some other people with the same problems. If you can get the tranny to shift good than i see no problem with you doing the swap. Good Luck on what ever you decide to go with!

Hi guys, sorry to bring that thread back to life.
I did the 2G tranny swap on my '91 Talon but I'm having problems.

I did rebuild the whole 2G tranny, center diff fixed, new seals, new bearings, new 2nd gear double synchro, new synchro keys and correct bearing spacers (to get correct clearance and preload).
So the tranny is like new now.

When I did the swap I reused the shift cable bracket and the shifter lever secured by bolts from the 1G one. Also took out the weight on the levers.

Ok the problem is that The 2nd gear pops out. I mean I can't make it get into gear correctly, It get's only half and of course then pops out as soon as the car makes some force. It doesn't matter if I try to put 2nd gear with the car running or stopped.

I've tried to adjust the shifter cable as manual say but no luck. 4th and reverse gears work fine. Althoug before adjusting the shifter cables 4th was poping out too.

Clutch is correctly adjusted. 1st, 3rd and 5th work perfect.

What can be wrong? Is a shifter lever problem or something internal?

I'll try to unplug the shifter cable and set 2nd gear by hand, then start the car and see if it goes well or still pops out.

The problem might lye in the fact that the shifter throw for the 1g and 2g tranny's are different. The 1G's shift linkages don't move far enough for proper shifting.

Are you sure it is a linkage issue? It could also be a transmission build issue.

Did the transmission dry-shift into 2nd when it was put back together? Did you shift it into every gear before install into the car? Who did the rebuild? How many springs were used on the 1/2 hub and slider to hold in the keys? It should be 1 spring on the 1st gear side, and 2 springs on the 2nd gear side. Also, are you running the proper shift rails?

Take off the shift linkage and try to shift it into gears manually (with the car turned off).

what about a 1g tranny into a 2g?

You have to swap bellhousings, which means disassembling the entire transmission. 1g's have 3 mounts on the engine and 1 on the tranny; 2g's have 1 mound on the engine and 3 on the tranny. 1g's have no provisions for the mounts.

I actually put all the internals from a 90 tranny in my 2g. If the tranny is a 93-94, all the internals should be identical to the 2g. The older ones didn't have the double syncro 2nd. The 90's have enough differences that you have to switch all the internals and then it will work fine.

I'm not shure if it's linkage or something else, that's why I was asking.

I tried to shift to every gear while I had the tranny out and seemed okay.
I did the rebuild myself.
And about the springs, there is only ONE spring on each side holding the keys (just like it was when I disassemble it). The manual and the CAPS program shows only one spring per side, not two. Maybe that's an upgrade from some rebuild shops?

And the shift rails were reused, so no mixing parts here.

Yeah, 1 spring is used per side in the "stock" rebuild reccomendations, whereas we use an extra one on the 2nd gear side for increased performance.

I would try to shift the trans at the trans itself by disconnecting the linkage. If it shifts easily into 2nd there, you have just deduced that it would be a linkage issue.

Problem solved.
It was shifter link problem. I just had to bend the lever a bit more Up and towards the firewall and now it works like a champ. :D

Yes, you just have to swap the "speed thing" from the old one to the 2G.
Also if you can, while the 2G tranny is out of the car, try to remove the "wheight" (You have to remove it or cut it as interferes with the lower radiator hose) and shift levers from the 2G and reuse the levers and shifter cable bracket from your old 1G.
The shifter cable bracket and one of the levers are just secured by 2 bolts. The other lever and "weight" have a wirst pins (or whatever is called) that are a PITA to remove.

I'm considering doing this job, but I don't know anything about the internals of the trannys. Do you have to open up the tranny to replace the spedometer connector or the shift arms on the tranny?
