I made 340whp without a front mount on my b16g, i can find the dyno sheet if you think you are so smart and its impossible and thats with just 19psi and translator eclipse95cl. No dont mean to flame but it really pisses me off when people get on here and talk down to the guys runnin 16gs. I havent been back on the dyno since i put my fp fmic on but i guarantee im makin 375whp on 23psi on my b16g

First of all before you get your panties in a bunch I wasn't talking down to 16g guys. I said 350whp on a 16g is pretty good. I don't know where you get that i was talking smack about a 16g.

Secondly I'm just asking for him to throw that thing on and bring us back the results thats all.

ok well i will hopefully be on by the end of the month and if your fimilar with pruven performance thats who i go to to dyno and tune. they are pretty good considering they have the worlds fastest evo all turbo no nitrious. and also slowboy has made 400 whp on a 16g thats what i'm trying for. i have the money to do a 60 trim but i want to see what i can get with all bolt on and a 16g with no race gas. should be close to 400.

More power to you, but why even bother?

If what you really want is 400hp then get 400hp. Why try and do it on a 16G anyway? To break some record or say you did it? Who cares. Just buy a 50 trim and you'll make 400hp easily with no fuss.

In the end 400hp is 400hp. Who gives a rats ass what turbo you do it on. It's whats gonna get you there the easiest that matters. Why fight for 400hp when its handed to you on a silver platter with a 50trim turbo.

I never did understand guys trying to do lots with a little. Just buy the biggest ass turbo you can get then you'll make whatever power your looking for much easier. Saying you made 400hp on a 16g doens't make your dick any longer or the girls like you any better.

Good Lord! That is so true. HAHA that was an awesome speech and I'm with ya all the way. More power though to the 16g guys trying to get 400hp out of it but like Jim said there are easier ways.

jim i could put a t-88 on my car and make all the power i ever wanted but id lag forever, point is 16g is a quick spooler and makin 400whp with makes it a very fast turbo on the street and the strip, now the interstate is different but we also arent running 1000hp supras so whatevers clever. also seeing as how most of us dont have money for dsmlink, antilag and a stutter box the 16g makes alot of since.

got a haynes/chiltons? should be pretty straight forward. couple bolts, cussing, sensors, yelling, brackets, heavy drinking. shouldnt be a problem.

A 50trim can do everything a 16G can do and makes more power so really there is no point in having a 16G at all. If you have a 16G already don't be so upset by what I'm saying and defend it to death. It is a good turbo and does what you said. A 50trim also does that but makes more power.

If you want to run 12's a 50trim even with shitty tuning will do it. A 16G with shitty tuning is a 14 second car.

no way thats BS i have never ran at a track but i have ran a friend that has a Z06 vette and i can stay right next to him so i guess Z06's run 14s now hmmm. i guess i learn something new everyday adn it was a highway run with my dinky 16g

That's not exactly a good thing to say, any car with either one of those turbos and shitty tuning is a blown up car. :D

It just comes down to what you want out of the car, both of these turbos can easily make 400 HP and we have all seen it done. It may take a little more work with the 16G, but I think that it is worth it when you consider the spool time on the two turbos. There is no way that you can think that a conventional bearing 50 trim is going to spool as fast as a 16G. I have riden in/and raced against 97Boost4u's car and that thing spools the hell out of that turbo. There is almost no lag what-so-ever in that car, it is a great street turbo.

GstRacer - By saying that you run 14s would imply that you have a "shitty tune". DSMJim doesn't say you have a "shitty tune".

ChvyKc - I'm not positive, but I don't believe a 16G can "easily make 400HP". The impression I've gotten from others' experiences is that 400 HP is close to the limit of a 16G, and 400 HP is probably on race gas. I'm in no way saying a 16G can't make it to 400 HP, but it doesn't seem to be as easy as it would be with a 50 trim. By the looks of some of the dyno numbers on this site, it doesn't seem to be too easy to get 400 HP out of a 50 trim either... but I digress.

As for the spool-up argument, a 50-trim is going to lag behind the 16G by maybe 500-600 RPM for full spool, maybe a little more depending on how little porting is done, etc. Granted part-throttle spool probably won't be nearly as good, which might be a bad thing in a street car. But if you're on the street you probably won't be running race gas, and therefore you won't have the 400 HP from the 16G.

A T-25 is a great street turbo too, with its almost instant spool up, but it doesn't make the amount of power that most DSMers are looking for. If you want more power on the street, I would recommend the 50-trim for this reason: you can make more power with the 50 trim on pump gas than you can on the 16G with pump gas. The tiny bit of extra lag isn't going to hurt you in the straight-line drag race.

...And for the rolling races, don't forget the phrase "power is just a down-shift away".

The only reason I'd recommend the 16G is if you didn't want to make 400 HP all the time. If you wanted to use race gas to run the 400 HP only at the track and dyno, and then pour in some pump and slip back to about 340-360 HP for the street and have better part-throttle response, then get the 16G.

enough with the bickering a evoIII 16g will make 350hp and bolts on like factory for $550. Ya sure a 50 trim will make more power but it is a bigger turbo, and it isn't a simple bolt on in most cases, it also costs a good deal more. OK? now enough with the damn 16g vs. 50trim debates.

Kurt I see you have a 1G... the Evo 3 16G doesn't bolt on like factory to a 2G, you need a J-pipe.. and you have to mess with the water lines a bit.

Also, many companies make "bolt-on" 50 trims, with kits that include all the parts necessary. It is only if you get a "full garrett" 50-trim that you need a new exhaust manifold, new downpipe, new oil lines, etc.

Just thought I'd let you know :thumb:

I too am sick of the debate... I started posting because of GstRacer and then I got carried away. :p

I am glad he is trying to max out his 16G, I too am sick of the 50 trim is G-d mentality that seems to plague DSM boards these days. Someone has to do it to find out what the extremes are, so having big cams, SMIM, aren't a waste, he can always upgrade later to a bigger turbo, it will just make for an even meaner car.

The Evo III is such a bargain compared to even the cheapest of 50trims, which usually require more massaging to get into a 2G, and I haven't seen enough dynos to prove it is that much of an upgrade for most guys' DDs. It also spools slower and I don't think the cheaper ones are as durable. But whatever. Good luck with the SMIM, let us know how it works out.

Ah, i totaly forgot about that, but still the waterlines and such are not that big of an obstical, the big thing i was concerned about was that fact that it bolts to the stock manifold and exhaust but the big thing is they are in most cases good for 350 on pump and only $550. I don't know what 50's cost but i doubt they can match the bang for the buck of a 16g.

I forgot one of the biggest downfalls of these cars the tranny. if your runnin the stock tranny what good is a setup that makes power from 4500-9000 when you can't shift it at 9k becuse the trannys are junk. this make a midrange turbo like the 16g all the more desireable for a street car.

Have a good day,
Kurt

this thread went from 0-### in 3.86 seconds.
all the guy was asking about is for a couple pointers about installing a SMIM. Im sure that the couple of guys that are flaming in this thread were given divine automotive knowledge at birth, and of course that makes anyone trying to learn a complete moron who should be working on a Huffy instead of their dsm.

vfaq.com should have something on there for you bro. Make yourself a checklist first, and you should replace some of the long term maintenance stuff while your in there.(ie: tb shaft seals, injector o-rings&insulators.)

I quick checked on VFaq... there's nothing about installing SMIM as far as I could tell (I looked under intake, engine, and turbo headings). DSMJim already linked to his install guide, which is very nice with many pictures and a good description of what was required to do the swap with the motor in the car. As soon as my 7-bolt crankwalks (in my case its not 'if' it's 'when') I'm going to use his guide on swapping in the 6-bolt block.

But yeah I agree, this thread went off topic shortly after it was started. At least the question was "answered" before it got too far off track. Thats all you can hope for, really.

I look forward to you posting your results... I'm looking at getting an Evo3 16G and I'm interested to see what its potential will be on your setup. Are you dynoing with pump gas or race gas?

well i dynoed a long time ago with only 15 psi and intake turbo back and ic pipes and fuel pump afc2 and i made 260 hp and 230 tq then i went back after a bumch more mods and 20psi and the clutch couldnt hold so now i will be back with a new clutch and should be fine now and i will dyno with pump i want to know my street hp

well problems the magnusison the car and it feels GREAT!!! it made a lot of power bad news is that my altenator started acting up droping voltage while i was at the dyno witvch is 1.5 hours away so i deside to trek home in case it fails completly on the dyno and iu cant make it home. i ordered a oem one thats will be here on tues so hopefully within the next 2 weeks i can be back at the dyno sorry guys

Don't feel bad! Remember, these are DSMs... this kind of thing happens. I'm glad to hear that it felt like it made more power, because that usually means that it did. Keep us posted! :thumb:
