Vancouver,
Hey guys, I just bought a 97 Eclipse GST and I'm a noob to DSM's, and I've been hearing alot of things about crankwalk lately. I just have a few questions, do all 2G's eventually crankwalk ? Are there some that never do ? I hear a ticking sound coming from my engine, and I was just wondering if it could possibly be an early sign of crankwalk ? I don't hear it the first few minutes after startup, but after I start driving it appears. I'm having a mechanic check it out tommorrow.

Good thing it's still under dealer warranty, I hope that's covered. :thumb:

Well, the mechanic told me it has something to do with the AC, I can't remember exactly what he said, but it's gonna cost me around a $1000 dollars to fix. Fortunately it's not anything urgent and I don't have to get it done right away. I'll probably just change my belts because they are squeaking right now.

i wouldn't go too heavy of a weight oil. have you looked a the stock t-25 oil lines lately? they are tiny compared to others and would hate to get any kind of build up to clog any oil line that small. i would recommend doing a full maintenence on your car. change all belts, filters, pumps, fluids ect.. and try using a good Mitsu oil filter and try using a 10w-30 Synthetic oil. i had the same problem when i got my car an then did all that above and ticking went away. check and see if ticking is in between your intake manifold and spark plugs holes. if it is its lifter chatter and Synthetic helped me. if its lower down by your Harmonic Balancer its another problem. make sure your car is outside out in the open when search for noise as the garage has acoustics that can change sounds and give an illusion of location.

I honestly don't think it's that over rated at all. Of the 2G motors I have pulled out of cars many of them had the end play out of manufacturer spec but the car still ran and didn't have any symptoms we know of crank walk. However when end play it outside of mitsu tolerances that IS crankwalk regardless if your pedal sticks to the floor or you hear ticking.

I'm willing to bet my 2G motor in my car now which is coming out shortly has end play double what the tolerance is allowed and last time at the track I went 12.12 @ 115 (havn't updated my profile yet) so what does that mean? Well my crank is walking for sure but its not affecting my car just yet. I probablly would have poped the HG before the crank went for a stroll...

i agree with you, dsmjim. My first dsm walked, the one i have now is beginning to walk. my brother in law just bought one for real cheap woth a walked motor. some people say its over rated i think its not overrated. this is a real problem and a lot of 2gs get it. i've seen a lot of them in person

It's not over rated when it happens to you. When I blew my n/t piston rings, We disasembled the 1g 7-bolt. The crank was way out of spec. I didn't really have any symptoms. Then we had a wreked 2g, and we took the crank and it was out of spec too. We got it chrome welded, and refinished, hopefully it holds up. You can check play without taking off your oil pan.
