Hey wondering if anyone could help me. Recently i blew my tranny on my 97 Tsi AWD:cry: . I shouldnt say recently...i havent had it for 5 months. I've been looking everywhere for a new AWD tranny but can't find them anywhere, or i have found one but it costs like a grand. I can get a rebuilt FWD tranny:barf: (pretty cheap) with a slow boy LSD in it for around $500. I would really hate to go to FWD for obvious reasons but i have no choice and need to get my car running VERY soon. I know launching will suck and all that, but i need it too run soon....i really would hate to go to fwd but it must be done, for now at least
>>>my question is what will i need to convert my AWD Tsi to FWD??? i know the flywheel must be changed and drive shaft removed, but will i need new axles or anything?? what else must i do??

i dont know what you need to do the swap but don't do it. Going to fwd from awd will be rough. Don't rush this or you will have a half assed car and you will hate yourself later...shep tranny time :sneaky: :rocks:

You would be better off just buying the tranny for a grand. With all the extra parts that you are going to need to get it swapped over and all the time that it is going to take you to do the swap you will be about even. Plus, you will hate yourself in the morning (AWD Rules :rocks: )

alright thanks, it's not permanant or anything, just for the time being. The awd tranny i found had a crap load of miles, just need to know what i need for the swap PLEAAASE I know it sucks...believe me but my car is taken apart over at my friends house and needs to get out soon, so this is my only option for now. so what do i need to do???

You're probably going to need a few things off this list below. The below link is for a 2G FWD-to-AWD conversion, but some of the things can be said for doing a AWD-to-FWD conversion too.

But David hit right on it:

Hey just wondering if the axles for the 2g AWD and FWD are the same? More importantly...will AWD axles fit in a FWD tranny????

You're probably not getting a lot of helpful replies because not to many people have thought this process through. Most AWD guys that want to go FWD just for a dyno day purchase a VCE and are done with it. I don't know of anybody that has done this swap, most people are going the oposite direction. One suggestion, you might be able to read the FWD to AWD conversion and get an idea of what is different between the two models. I would at least see what type of work it is going to take to get everything completely finished and swapped over.

I guess I just don't see the point of doing something this extensive if it is only going to be temporary. I do understand the need to get the car running though, been there and done that. Good luck with the swap if you decide to do it. :thumb:
