Okay my friend brings me a 97 2g GST with a 6bolt relatively low miles probably about 4k on the new engine.

I was told it never overheated but that’s just word of mouth

I was replacing the radiator because the coolant was boiling over, turns out upper neck on radiator was corroded and fell apart so I replaced the radiator but noticed oil in the water. (The radiator I was replacing was purchased used) and I was replacing it with a new radiator

So automatically I assume the head gasket is blown. But there is no coolant in the oil and from the looks of the oil in the coolant the oil has been there for quite some time. Kind of turning into sludge and what not.

The car is not overheating nor sputtering so I'm just looking for an opinion. I've never seen oil mix with coolant but no coolant contamination in the oil when the head gasket is blown.

Do people think the head gasket is blown or could the old radiator just have possibly been filled full of crap and just contaminated the cooling system.

The cooling system is independant of the lubrication system. Very unlikely for oil to have found it's way in to the coolant unless either the HG was compromised or a cylinder/head cracked.

Pressure test your cooling system (testers avail that connect to your water neck inlet. If you hear air escaping from the dipstick tube/oil filler, then likely your HG was compromised.

If consuming oil and/or coolant, then a leakdown test should be performed and look for air bubbles in the radiator overflow tank and excess crankcase pressure from the dipstick tube/oil filler :dsm:

Well if there was a small breach in head gasket integrity between an oil and coolant passage, it would be more likely to find oil in the coolant as it operates at higher pressures than your cooling system. You could try flushing the whole cooling system and filling it with fresh coolant so see if it gets contaminated before investing money into other solutions.

Do the pressure test and compression/leakdown like John suggested. If that doesn't help, I would grab a hydrocarbon testor (known as a block testor at Autozone/Advance) and follow the directions on that. That should help tell you if your headgasket is blown as well.
