Currently I don't own a DSM. I am, however, looking into buying my 3rd Talon. My work (a local dealership) has a '92 Talon ES automatic they want to get rid of, since it has a blown motor. It only has 75k miles and they're asking $300. I'm really considering picking it up, as long as what I want to do is feesable.

I've talked to guy in my area that has a 1G Talon with a 2G 420a motor in it. He said it's "the best damn Talon" he'd ever owned, and he's had several. He said the swap was fairly straight foreward, as long as you had a donor car (2G) handy for wiring, trans, etc. So, I was thinking of hitting up a junk yard for misc. Talon parts to do a manual conversion (center console, shifter, etc.) and a 420a motor and manual trans.

My question is not can it be done, but how many people have done it? I'd like to have the 420a motor, since there's more N/T performance parts for it (header, intake, cams, clutch, etc.) than the N/T 4g63.

ive never heard of anybody putting a 420a engine into a 1st gen, personally i wouldnt do it if ur gonna do an engine swap your better off taking a 4g63t engine and putting it in there.....but im sure somewhere it has been done just not often because more people lean towards the mitsu engine, and the turbo engine has plenty of aftermarket parts to increase hp, but thats what i would do if i had the time and money, its all up to you, just something to think about. good luck with it.

Don't swap a 420a into a 1g.

1- Its about as difficult as swapping a 4g63 into a 2gnt.

2- Much much easier to swap in a 4g63t, as it is essentially the same engine, just with a turbo and some minor details.

3- The 420a doesn't have near the potential or reliability of a 4g63. Just be sure you get a 6-bolt so you don't have to worry about crankwalk.

I'm trying to stay away from a turbo motor, that's what I have my Merkur XR4Ti for. I'm trying to put together a good daily driver, non-turbo, but still pretty quick. Are there any performance parts for the non-turbo 4g63? If so, I'll just plop in a stock motor. I'm just looking to do typical bolt-ons (header; intake; ignition; fuel) and maybe crank out 180hp? Nothing big mind you, just not stock. Nothing I've ever driven has been totally stock.

Stock non-turbo 4g63.

With all the regular boltons, you can expect to have about 140 whp, if your engine's in good shape. Makes for an ok daily driver, but personally, I'd just keep this non-turbo stock and save your modding money for the Mekur.
