someone online is selling a 20g turbo for $260, that seems kinda cheap to me. he says there is minimal shaft play but it still works fine. what do you guys think? he doesnt have any pics so i have drive to his location to check it out. what should i look for to determine its a real 20g, ### ive heard stories of people tryin to sell generic turbos:dsm:

make sure the compressor housing is a genuine TDO6 housing. I've never had any experience with TDO5 housing 20g's, but I've read many stories of how they are crap-stay away if it says TDO5 on the housing. $250 is dirt cheap and I would be cautious. .5 millimeter of shaft play would be the max I would accept for a $250 turbo.

I would not buy something as vital as a turbo from some random person online. If you're buying it from a place like eBay, or something similar like that where they have a buyer/seller rating I'd go by that. Also, if you have anyone that is fairly close to you who knows a thing or two about turbos, I'd make sure you let them ride along with you.

so i went to meet dude in san jose, felt like it had 5mm of shaft play:nono: i didnt buy it though, waste of a trip. the moral of the story is: Dont buy turbos from strangers!!

I dont really agree with that
What if you bought a brand new 20g and 3000km after you decide you want bigger, is there a better place where to sell it than online ? or on a dsm forum?
You re saying i shouldnt buy it from you cause you re stranger?
It might be the guys case, and it s not because it s a turbo sold online that it means it s automatically scrap, you re just buying a used turbo.
And honestly 5mm is not that much of a big deal , some turbo come out of the factory with minimal shaft play like an evo3, so 260$ for a turbo with a little shaftplay just sounds fair to me
also if the guy wanted to screw you he wouldnt have told you to meet him at his place imo

5mm is a hell of a lot of shaft play. The "minimal shaft play" you speak of that a turbo comes with from the factory is a necessary tolerance to allow for an oil cushion in the bearing section. Not only is it a very tight tolerance, you should barely be able to feel it if you try to wiggle the compressor wheel. For an ebay seller "minimal shaft play" could be a centimeter of movement, since "minimal' is a relative term.

Speaking of anything that requires tight tolerances, such as engines, turbos, etc. it's always best to inspect the part in question before buying, that way YOU can feel how much shaft play there is and decide if ithere's too much for your comfort or whether it falls into your expectation of what "normal" is. This is why buying used parts on ebay/online is always a gamble.

Kudos to DsmKid4 for taking the steps necessary to protect himself from possibly buying a flawed part.

Do you perhaps mean to say that the tdo5H wheel and 7 cm housing does not flow enough to qualify using a MHI wheel that can flow 55 lbs/min?

Evo3 16g guys seam to love the tdo5h wheel and 7 cm housing. They seam to flow enough for over 450 whp. see: RayPeters td05H 18G.

He made 450+whp with a supercharger and a turbocharger. On top of that he was running methonal. I sure hope he's making 450+. His set up is very impressive though. A good example of engineering, time and skill. I think 450+whp is capable with a 20g but will be pushing to the limit on a stock motor.

It s true that minimal shaft play is ...very relative to say the least
But I wouldnt ve bought it unless i could ve checked myself that shaft play

LOL What? Did he push some exhaust gasses through the supercharger and some through the turbo? He still had to push 450 whp worth of exhaust gasses through the turbine housing and turbine wheel. It obviously flows enough for that kind of horsepower!!!

He was running pump gas. W/ water/meth injection. Not pure methenol. Besides, how does meth allow a turbine housing and wheel to flow more?

Yes, I do think a td05h 20g can put down 450whp and I do think that it will push beyond a 7 bolt. But not a 6 bolt of course.

P.S. and this goes to show the flow potential of the 18G compressor wheel. It after all was feeding the supercharger/engine combo. His engine/supercharger combo setup is very similar to a 3.0L displacement engine in volume displacement. And the 18g wheel gave it enough air and expelled enough air for 450whp. It's a testamony to the 18g potential.
