Ok so I purchased a 20g turbo used for about 400 bucks. I get the turbo and its ?thrust bearings? are bad. It doesn't move side to side but in and out. The turbo would still work if I put it on now or at least I'm pretty sure it would. I just don't want it to completely blow up on me before i can fix it.

I'm just hoping you guys can tell good rebuild shops. Links or phone numbers would be good.

Definitely don't try running that turbo before it's rebuilt. Bad things can happen once it develops a healthy amount of axial play.

I second having Justin rebuild it. He's the man when it comes to journal bearing rebuilds. Here's his Freelancer ad: Journal Bearing Turbocharger Rebuild Service - DSM Classifieds

Your turbo basically has crankwalk. As we all know there is not much of an acceptable tolerance for crankshaft wear before the crank ruins the block....this is the same for turbochargers. There is hardly any in/out play allowed before the wheels rub the housings and ruin the turbo.

I urge you to get this repaired as soon as possible or you're putting the turbo at further risk of damage. Even if the compressor wheel is already scuffed, pushing it further may ruin the compressor cover as well...at which point the entire turbo becomes a paperweight because it would be too costly to repair.

If your turbo has any noticeable in/out play...even a "click", it's going to get worse rapidly. You need to have it serviced immediately to prevent any further damage.

Ya thanks a lot guys my dad is a mechanic and he specializes in DSMs. He wanted me to find a couple places online since there are none in the area. I didn't plan on using it I just figure id offer up information to help answer my question
