1st Rebuild, How Do I Put Cams In Time?

Finishing up my first rebuild. Just wondering how I can tell the cams are in time, and also I have the balance shafts removed, so does just the crank and the cams have to be in time? The oil pump doesn't matter correct? thanks

All you have to do is make sure that the #1 piston is at DTC and then make sure all the timmin gmarks line up. The dowels on the cams should be straight up when this is done. Youdont need to time the oil pump any more but I do it just becasue I am weiurd like that.

You should not be doing this if you don't know the crank and cams need to be in time. The oil pump doesn't matter anymore once the balance shafts are removed but the crank and cams MUST be in PERFECT time. Check out vfaq.com and read the timing belt sections.

I know they need to be in time, I just didn't know how to put the cams in time. Thanks though.

Just to be clear, with the dowels up, you need to line up the INSIDE timing marks, between the gears. 3 o'clock position on the exhaust, 9 o'clock on the intake. The other outer marks will never line up. They are there so you can use either gear on either the intake or exhaust. If your balance shafts are removed you don't need to align the oil pump sprocket.

if the head is off the car the easiest way to set the cam timing is by alligning the notches on the cam gear, and then looking at the notches and make sure they are perfectly level with the top of the head. With the head off the car you can get the right angle to make sure the cam angles are perfectly lined up with the head. if the head is on the car already then just allign the gears in the 3 oclock for the exhaust and the 9 oclock for the intake like 4pistons said.

I cant recall right now, but aren't there 2 notches on each cam gear 180 degrees apart? if there are its easy to figure out which ones are the right one for #1 cylinder compression TDC. Just look at the the intake cams on the #4 cylinder, if the intake cams are just about to open then its right on. If the intake cam is 1 stroke away from opening then #4 is on compression TDC not overlap. Intake opens right after exhaust so after overlap intake would be next.

I don't think they are exactly 180 apart. The exaust cam is 3 degrees 5 mins advanced compared to the intake so the mark has to take that into account.
