I just bought a 5spd 99 GST. The car has 117K miles on it and the clutch was just replaced. The problem is first gear. If I am stopped and push the clutch in, the shifter will go into first and I can hear the tranny do the same. Now when I let the clutch out, even slowly, you see the shifter pop back a little bit and you hear the tranny grind. This only happens in 1st and no other gear.

Here is the weird part. It only happens some of the time. So when my father and I were test driving it, he popped the hood and was holding the shifter linkages so it would stay in gear. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it doesn't. He moved the car yesterday into the garage, by himself with the hood down, and the car shifted right into first and had no problem engaging.

We think that it is something with the actual shifter or the linkages in the console, or the shifter linkages under the hood.

Any input would be helpful, thanks.

I've searched the topic and it seems that none really apply to my situation. Everyone else has AWDs or 1gs. But the thing with my car is that it doesn't always have the issue. Sometimes when you release the clutch it engages, other times it grinds. You can sort of tell when it will engage because the shifter feels different. So I'm not sure if its actually in the car below the shifter or under the hood.

Please any input would be helpful since I do want to get this on the road ASAP. thanks guys.

Mines doing the same thing .. ive adjusted my shifter linkages once under the center console and it helped a little .. but i was under the impression on mine its mostly due to the fact i have a JDM tranny (i think the shifter arms are different then the US) and us cables ..

I have a 90 awd .. some one help us!

Okay, we disconnected the shift cables today and were shifting the car by hand (under the hood). It seems like shifting by hand helps, but 1st still seems to grind. It doesn't always seem to fully "click" into gear. My father tells me sometimes you can hear and feel it click into the "D-Tent" and sometimes not.

He thinks that it is possibly a bent fork, synchro, or chipped tooth. Again this only happens in first, every other gear is fine.

Our next step is to look for a used/new 2g FWD tranny to have lined up. Then we will probably have to remove the current tranny and open it up to take a look. If it looks unrepairable or exceeds the cost of what the new/used one cost, then we will just do a tranny swap.

Any input?

If shifting by hand helps you have a problem somewhere. If you install another tranny the same thing is probably going to happen again.

intermediate end bearing is worn (the one on the bellhousing side), and this is causing the intermedate shaft to sink down towards the bellhousing. This little bit of movement doesnt allow the sleeve to fully engage the teeh on the gear and is forcing it to pop out. This is oh so common in the 2g transmissions. If you let this go you will eventually wear out the sleeve, synchro, and gear causing you to replace all of them and the bearing. I would probably replace all of the above anyways because trans removal and tear down is a pain in the ass (espically in a 2g)

I doubt its your linkage as its non adjustable in the 2g. The only other possability that it may be is that the rubber bushing in the shift cable is torn. This can be easily be remidied by removing the bushing and replacing it with a rollerblade/skateboard bearing. Search the forums on how to do this.

There is a vfaq on transmission teardown/rebuild. Look on there to see what im talking about. The bearing I speak of is under the first gear. The 1-2 shift sleeve is the one that is toothed for reverse.
