1st and 2nd not there!!!??

My tranny wont engage 1st or 2nd gear, its like their not there. Trying to put the car in either gear results in going to 3rd or 4th. none of my gears grind and 3rd - 5th + reverse shifts and drive fine, could the shift linkage or the shifter itself be a problem?

This is a 5pseed 91 AWD.

Is it really easy to move the shifter were it used to be to go to 1 and 2?

If you race, or shift hard that's most likely your problem..I idiotically shifted like a dumbass a few times a week ago or so, and I could barely get it in/out of 1st and it was resistant to 2nd. Now, somehow it has cleared itself out and goes in fine. I'm not sure what happened, then fixed itself.

actually i bought the car not running and rebuilt it from top to bottom and now im trying to drive the car and im having a problem getting it into first gear....think i'll take it to the tranny shop.
