I got a 1991 eagle talon from my friend. He said it wouldn't start because of Neutral Safety Switch(because it has to be in park or neutral to start it). But he was wrong and thats not it. So does anyone have any ideas, I'm baffled on where to start. Where should it I start. It's a non turbo, automatic, and it's FWD. I believe it's a tsi? Not sure.

Thanks

First off we need a little more info about what is going with the car. Does it try to turn over, turn the key and nothing happens...ect... First things first, start with your electrical system make sure all your cabels are attached to the proper location, also check for loose grounds. Somthing as simple as a loose ground can keep a car from starting. Hope that helps for starters give us a little more detail and hopefully we can help you solve your problem.

As for the TSI wasnt that the turbo model? I could be totally wrong I am a Laser guy.:laser:

We need alot more information. TSI is a turbo model talon. Does it crank? Do you hear a clicking sound when key is in the 'on' position? Does the dash even light up? Is the battery good?

guess it's not a tsi, it can crank, i had a guy come look at it to buy it, but he couldn't get it to start. So, it does crank. It does click, so starter is good. Dash does light up, the batter is completely charge, the battery is a Redtop Optima battery, i fully charged it at my dad's work garage, and had it checked and the battery is completely full. So I look at some tech articles, but they didn't help too much, they just had a lot of info with no pictures, so I had no clue what anyone was talking about. I know a little bit, so any info would be good.

First I would see if I could hear the fuel pump turn on. Have someone stand at the gas door and listen when you turn the key into the on possition. IF you hear it activate for a few seconds then turn off, you are good. Then check to see if you are getting fuel pressure at the fuel rail, check it on the schrader valve. If it is good there, check your spark. Pull the wire off each plug and hold it close to some metal, you should see it spark. IF it is good there, check at the coil. IF you are getting spark, I would check compression.

In a 1g, the fuel pump relay is not activated until the key is in the RUN/START position. Turning it to ON does not activate the relay, so you wouldn't hear the pump until the car is cranking or running.

thank you soooooooooo much, I got the car to run one time for about 10 secs in early september, I had to fool around with the shifter for about an hour, but i ran for 10 secs, and the best 10 secs of my life!!!! Does anyone know where to get a neutral safety switch any ways, or do you know how to bypass it so I don't have to have someone come and try to start my car for me?

Well, if your car cranks (rotates, but doesn't fire up), then I doubt your Neutral/Clutch Safety Switch would be the issue. 1g Autos have an inhibitor switch that is located on the transmission. This is not the same as the clutch safety switch, located above the clutch pedal assembly on M/T cars.

In an automatic, if the inhibitor switch is faulty, it will keep the starter motor from engaging (so the car would click, but not crank, and you wouldn't hear the starter turning, similar to what happens when you have a completely dead battery, or try to start a M/T car without the clutch depressed). The inhibitor switch acts as a "bridge" between the ignition switch and the starter motor. If the car is not in N or P when the key is turned to START, the starter circuit is not completed, and the starter motor will not engage.

There's another possibility that may be worth looking into in this case, and that's your control cable. It looks just like the shift cables on a M/T car, and is connected to the top of your transmission. When it's faulty or out of adjustment, your inhibitor switch can't operate correctly and won't let the car start, even if it appears to be in P or N.

It's been a while since I've worked with a 1g Auto, so I'll just take this from my service manual for your reference, in case this turns out to be the problem (see attached). Basically just showing you what everything looks like, in case you need to look for these parts. If you need any further specific information or diagrams, let me know.

But like I said, if the car is cranking, this would not be your problem, as everything here is connected to the starter motor. If that's engaging consistently, your problem lies elsewhere.
