All 1g wheel and tire size questions from the newbie sections are merged here.

hi,
i am interested in putting 18" motegi MR-7 wheels on my 1991 plymouth laser. my only problem is i do not know if they will fit in the wheel well with tires. if anyone out there has 18" wheels on their laser....please let me know so and also tell me what size tire you have on the wheel. i would also like to know how snugly they fit in the wheel well. if 18's dont fit i guess i will have to go for 17 inch wheels. what is a good size tire that would fit a 17" wheel?

thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me

If the tires at the front of the car turn at a different speed than the tires at the rear of the car, your viscous coupling will burn up. www.Tirerack.com has a nice feature that shows you the revolutions per mile for each tire, you can have two tires the same size and get different revolutions per mile. That means either the front or the rear is going to be spinning at a different rate and will damage your vc. If all 4 of the tires are the same brand and same size then you won't have any problems

as for the wider in the frount and skinnier in the back comment.......shouldent it be the other way around? I always thought the skinnier frount tires and wider back make turning better?

Our cars are setup like fwd with the motor sitting side ways, there is alot of weight on the front wheels. Your need a wider front tire, with a skinner rear tire. This makes the car go around a turn better.

If you put wider wheels in the back, its going to make the car understeer bad.

Dont apply RWD anything to our cars, were setup more like a fwd if you can figer out what im trying to say.

If you dont belive me conntact a SUS TECH wiseman and ask him your self....

Mavisky one of the mods with the Blue fwd talon that was NT and he converted to turbo, he has gold rims and falkin tires with white writing on them, connact him and he will tell you the same as I did.

I would have to disagree with that. For the most part it is very true. I know this guy he is running 18x8.5 in front and 18x9.5 in the rear and he is having know problems but he had to figure out the rotaion of the tires to get them to be the same. its something like 235/45 in front and 265/35 in rear and it has the same rotation. Besides the new skyline that is coming out has different rims and its awd. So it could be done

Okay, I am offically confused on the verdict here. I've been trying to learn whats good and whats not good by just reading replies and stuff, but this topic has just kept me confused.

We have multiple sides to this issue:

Different Width Tires are OKAY as long as the Wheel + Tire height is the same all around.
Different Width Tires (and all else equal) is NOT okay - Due to differences in rolling resistances.

It is also not recommended mixing different brands/model tires even if the same size due to the difference in rolling resistance/traction compounds.
And those who are so anal that they don't want to run the same tire with different amounts of wear ROFL

So whats up? Just use the same tires all the way around or is it fine to use any kind of width tire as long as the wheel height is the same on all four corners?

All this wondering makes me wonder how much use a spare tire is if all its going to do is fry your VC.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also I would not use a spare with after market rims, say you have 17s or somthing and you use the spare for a long distance could mess somthing up.

I'm sure a $75K car also has a much better way to transfer power than a 100% mechanical VC, especially if designed for a set sized wheel/tire combination.

The $290K AWDLamborghini Murcielago has over an inch difference in tire height front to back, but again was designed that way from the beginning.

If the overall tire height on our cars is different front/back, the VC will adjust tork by thru thermal expansion of the interal fluid on the drive disks. Kinda like riding your clutch all the time = not a good idea :dsm:

Did you forget to take your Ritalin

Um its a very simple thing, you cant use a larger side wall and you cant have staggerd wheels in different sizes, But you can have wider tires in the front to make the car rotate around the turn, I dont understand why people arent getting this conpect im getting a wider front tires when mine need to be replaced it doesnt do anything wrong.

You will not find an exact circumference match when mixing and matching tire sizes. I don't think anyone truly knows the threshold of what the VC can take.

my car has 17x7's and i run 225/45/17;s so as long as the offset is correct they should fit Im not sure what offset you will need though

Hey whats up i have a freind that built me a 91 eclipse gs turbo fwd. It has new internals custom turbo mani, 57 trim turbo, magnes intake mani, kevlar belt, manual boost controller, 660cc injectors, bigger fuel pump, and msd ignition i will have a hard time hooking but how wide of a tire can i use before hitting the mcpherson strut please help thanks

There are a lot of ways to answer this..but start by reading some information:

http://www.vfaq.com/mods/macross/offsetFAQ.html

Do a search on this site as well, there is a lot of information here. I have a 92 FWD so I am guessing you have the stock rims which are 16X6.. I currently run 225/50/16's and they are squeezed on there pretty good. I will most likely not go much bigger. (225 mm is almost 9 inches wide LOL)

Honestly, some decent DR's at 225 should be fine. The best way to get traction in a FWD is by improving your driving and learning the proper launch. An LSD (or B&M lock insert) and some suspension (KYB AGX adjustables) will help eliminate wheel hop, minimize weight transfer, and improve traction. If you need serious traction for the track, look in to getting some slicks to wear while you are there. :rocks:

I think that if i did go with the coil over set up that eliminates the mcpherson strut correct the owner of the shop was building this for his drag car he already has a semi tub in the front wheel wells and if id did get coil overs i could run wider tires right

I am pretty sure you can use a 235... I know with 245 you need to roll the quarter. Yea, and SkURTnDSM92T is right learn to drive your car better and you won't need such a wide tire... Learn throttle control.

i had 235 45 17's on my fwd tsi, no rubbing issues at all.

Well your aspect ratio is different than I listed..Also did you have your car lowered? That is going to depend on the tire you can run as well..

hummm... 245's huh? wonder if i could tuck the 295 45 18's or the 305 45 18's off my lightning under those front fenders

yes, it 's lowered on intrax springs, 1.5" in think. are you using 16 or 17" wheels? depending on which size wheel you use is going to change the aspect ratio to keep the overall diameter the same as stock.

if you plan on sticking with the stock wheels then i wouldnt go much wider then a 215 seeing as the stock size is a 205. if you want alittle wider tire go with a 215 50 16. thats gonna give you more rubber on the ground and be about the same rolling diameter as the stock 205 55 16s. its true you can get a wider tire on the wheel but at a certain point itll hurt more performance then help. at a certain point if the tire is too much wider than the wheel all going wider is goin to do is cause it to roll more and hurt performance. if you want to go any wider than that you're gonna want get a set of aftermarket wheels. personally i have a set of 225 45 17s on my car and i have a set of 17 x 7 inch wheels. if i want to go any wider than that ill need to upgrade to a 7.5 or 8 inch wheel. if you have any further qs please feel free to ask ive worked for discount tire for about 5 years now so if you need some advice let me know. good luck

245 45 17 is going to rub. 245 45 17s will almost rub on an evo 9 and they come stock with 235 45 17s. also is the car lowered? the offset sounds alright but the tire size is alittle big. id go with a 235 40 17. if you can avoid wheel spacers please do. just buy a wheel and tire that fit right. in my line of work ive seen alot of people have a wheel fall off because they put on spacers. many people use spacers that are way to wide and when you put on these spacers you have less stud for the lug nut to grab onto. it makes it easier to not torque the wheel right lose a wheel. if you MUST use a spacer make sure it is one that centers itself on the hub of the vehicle. good luck.
