Hey guys today I decided to take a chance and smog my car. (Stock 1g talon) The great news is I passed! So I decided to start the modding process. I started with a boost leak test and when I hooked up the tester and added compressed air the gauge would jump up just a bit but you could hear air shooting out from somewhere. I tried to pin point the location but the air would shoot out before I had a chance to find it. It would make a loud air shooting noise. I narrowed it down towards the left front part of the engine. So after not being able to find any leaks I took my cracked 1g mani off And got a chance to look into my turbo for the first time. The exhaust housing was cracked in a lot of places and the manifold was junk. Also one of the exhaust mani bolts snapped off and half of it was left in the head. So could the turbo be the cause of the huge leak from the BLT? Does anyone know the size drill bit needed to drill into the broken manifold stud? Also the right size easy out needed? Thanks for all the help guys. I will get some pics tomorrow morning.

If that stud isn't broken even with the head then just use a pair of vice grips to grab it and turn it out. If it is, then just go buy a set of easy outs and eye ball what size drill bit you will need, it's not like there is a specific size.

As for the boost leak test, see if you can get a buddy to help you out, that way someone can keep the air going to the system constantly while the other one looks for the leak. I doubt it's your turbo. Did you check if maybe your BOV is opening up when you put pressure to it?

Thanks for the reply. The sound is really loud and clearly coming from around the front of the engine around the manifold/turbo area! I sprayed a ton of soapy water and got nothing.

Do you have the upper intercooler pipe still connected to the throttle body? If you do, take it off and cap it, then test it.

It's possible you have air blow past/through valves, or into the crank case somehow.

I was trying to set the car 30 degrees ATDC but couldn't figure out how to get it right on! Now I'm gonna have to wait a but before a retest because I gotta figure what route I'm gonna take with this cracked 14b. Next time ill definitely test it at the tb!

It doesn't have to be exactly 30* - that's just a rough value. However you may just be pressurizing 2 cylinders at 30* and may want to read this: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/art...st-how-boostpro-net-tester.html#post152554139

Thanks for the link! That helps quite a bit!!

I tried to extract the stud today. I ended up drilling into it with a 1/8 inch drill bit. I got the 1/8 inch size extractor but it was not big enough to grip the stud. So does anyone know what size extractor to get that will work in the 1/8 inch hole that I drilled into it??? Im starting to feel like I might have to helicoil it. :notgood: Also examined my turbo and the noticed that the exhaust side is cracked also. I guess time to upgrade right?

Here are some pictures I took.

I assume the bolt is an M8 (5/16") so a #4 extractor with a 1/4" drill (it's stamped on the extractor). I like the screw extractor set made by Black & Decker (#16270) better than the old Craftsman as the extractors have a finer thread so it's more spiraled.
Here's some good EZ out instructions: How to Use Easy Outs | eHow.com

So I totally did not screw myself over with drilling a 1/8 inch hole in the stud??? I really don't want to have to helicoil! Thanks for all the help!

Would I need to drill a bigger hole in the stud? Or is there an extractor that will utilize the 1/8 inch hole that I already drilled in the stud?? Has anyone ever done this with exhaust mani studs?? Which bits and extractors did you use? Did you have success?
