ok a buddy has a stock gvr4 and it blowing a bit of black smoke under boost,
so its running rich and it has a 1g ecu in it and the stock gvr4 mafs,
is that why its running rich?
does it need the 1g mafs to compensate since it has the 1g ecu?
the boost leak test is good, timing (both) plugs everything is good

Probably normal. 1Gs run as rich as 9.5ish to 1 AFR from the factory.

The mafs themselves are the same except for the fact that the gvr4 maf has the lower screen out from factory
It also uses a slightly different maf compensation map in the ecu, its so close that it shouldn't be noticeable though. The ecu should be able to compensate the fuel trims for it no problem
