Hey guys, new here to the forums and to DSM's in general. I have been reading all i possibly can find and trying to take everything in. Just picked up a 96 GSX that is pretty much stock except for turbo back exhaust, intake, BOV, and coil-overs. I have a friend who tells me that the 1G intake manifold allows for better flow than the stock one on the 2G's. My question is, with current mods and adding that intake, will anything get screwed up or run worse since i don't really have a way to tune/compensate for the increased air coming in. Which leads me to the question of is the intake worth putting on in the first place?

I honestly don't see any issue, bigger injectors and fuel control would probably go nice with the manifold swap. If it really is too much air and you have no vac/boost leaks, your ECU will let you know with a nice fuel cut. I don't see that happening though. The excess air coming from the manifold swap will still be metered.

Negative. 1g intake manifolds have bigger ports than 2gs, so bolting it in will be like putting a plate over part of the intake tract. You will actually hurt performance. If youre just wanting a little extra kick in the pants, make sure all maintenance is up to date, buy or make an mbc and turn the boost up a little. Maybe 14 lbs or so and have fun

Ok cool. Thanks for the quick response. Not really looking to even do anything to the car yet. Wanna learn about everything first, only asked because a friend offered. I eventually plan to do just about all the obvious/basic mods.

Will it even be worth swapping the manifolds out at this point? Wondering if i will notice a difference. Also forgot to mention i do have a boost gauge and a cheap a/f gauge, not a wideband though.

ah ok good to know:thumb: exactly what i was looking for. yea timing belt, plugs/wires, fuel filter all on the way for maintenance. Boost controller soon after. Still have the regulator in, so running 9 pounds now. have read the stock turbo setup is good until like 15-16 lbs. planned on setting at low teens and just driving for a while until i learn everything.

I wouldn't do it, there are many other mods that you can do to add some performance. Do what cdc says. 14psi sounds safe enough.

That "Narrow band" is what you have, isn't really helping you. It only has a 1 volt threshold. The wide band gets its name because it has 5 times the threshold at 5 volts.

ok cool, 14 lbs it is. yea the gauges seem like crap. i think the kid put them on there to feel "fast" haha who knows.

and about the name, i honestly was worried nobody would get it LOL i think it is pretty comical

haha i agree. I feel like some people on here wont like it and think i am some die hard like fast and furious wanna be. oh well LOL. thanks for the quick input guys.

"i like the tuna here" very clever. by far the best film of the series. first gen intake mannifold doesnt work on a 2G engine because the flange at the bottom of the intake manni has such larg runners that there bigger than the intake ports on a 2G head. sure it will bolt on. sure it will cover the "holes" but the amount of turbulance cause by that nasty lip thats now in there will def cause more harm than good.

2G heads and 2G intake mannifolds got smaller in design on purpose. this smaller intake track premotes "velocity". this effect truly helps, but it only helps to a certain point. there becomes a point where bigger is just better. that top end power is gonna take big parts in every department.

1G head = 1G mannifold , 2G head = 2G mannifold no exceptions

Hmm, now I'm thinking. Is the 2g intake manifold even still a different size than the 7 bolt 1g?

dsmcurse, thanks for the input. That makes perfect sense once explained like that. first thing for me is maintenance parts though, then ill start building for power. unless i have been reading the wrong information, sounds like MBC, 16g/front mount, injectors (650's maybe), fuel pump (255 is what everyone seems to talk about), and an adjustable fuel pressure regulator are whats needed to get a decent amount of power while keeping things balanced out

Just throw in an aftermarket gauge and you're good to go. I'm running 14psi with a Voodoo mbc, and Autometer boost gauge. 100% stock everything aside from NGK plugs and wires. No problems at all, had her like this for about a month now no issues, even brought her to the track only to find out I had a serious leak somewhere hahaha. Times weren't the greatest:|
