Ok before I start I want to say I have looked at both RRE and Magnus write ups on this. I have read many threads to try to grasp this but I still cannot understand 100% what I need to do.

I swapped a 1g 7 Bolt (yes 7 bolt not 6 bolt) into my 97 gsx with automatic transmission. I have my reasons for not doing a 6 bolt swap so please, I don't need to know about how I should have done a 6 bolt instead of 7 bolt, thank you.

Also I am looking to do this without buying a 1g cas if it is possible. I know that with the cas I could set base timing but I am not interested in that at this time (again I have my reasons).

This used to connect into my 2g CAS and as you can see on the valve cover behind the connector the new motor doesn't have a cas on this side of the valve cover.

This is a picture of my old 2g motor in case it may help. As you can see the cas on the passenger side of the valve cover using the connecter in the picture above.

This is a picture of the timing side of the new (1g) motor. There are two connectors here (black, grey) where there used to only be one (black). I dont have a pic of my old timing side to show the single plug on it.

Both of these connectors come from inside the timing cover. As you can see I have already connected the black plug because it fit. I assume this was for the Crank Sensor. Please tell me if I am wrong on this.

My whole issue is the following:

1. I assume the other plug is for the cam sensor. If that is correct then why would I have to buy another 1g cas that mounts to the valve cover side other than to be able to change base timing?

2. If this is a cam sensor, what is the easiest way to wire this up to the factory plug on my 97 wiring harness? I have thought of two options, cutting both plugs and hard wiring the two sets together (using some sort of connector in the middle somewhere so it can be unplugged if necessary) or cutting the wiring harness on a 1g (junkyard) for the timing side connection and using that to connect to my 97 vehicle harness (after cutting the connector that normally connected to a 97 cas)

One reason i don't really want to cut the harness on my car is that when I rebuild the motor that spun a bearing on my original motor it is going to go back in and I do not want to have to re-splice the connector back in.

3. I see that Magnus and RRE make harnesses for this conversion. Specifically Magnus makes two different ones and this one is for a 97-99 car.

This is basically what I was talking about in question 2. If I can make this on my own I can save the $75 bucks for something I need to build my broken motor.

The reason I have the questions is because I am reading about needing the cam and crank signal both pushed through the same harness on a 1g swap. Is this because most people are talking about a 6 bolt swap and it is different then my situation?

4. Is switching the injector and spark plug order necessary in my situation if I am not buying a 1g cas? (I do not have DSMLink)

I will probably have some more questions but I cant think of any off hand. I think most of my issue is reading 5 different threads that talk about 5 different configurations (i.e. 6 bolt, 7 bolt, 95-96 or 97-99, 1g cas install or not). It seemed to me there are many different combinations when it came to this swap.

Thank you for reading and helping with my confusion. I am sorry if this has been asked 95 times and I somehow missed it in my hours of searching.

Stop over thinking it, you're driving me crazy ROFL.

Quick breakdown the 1g CAS combines the CamAngleSensor & CrankPositionSensor (95-99 use both, CAS on the intake cam (2ga located bolted to cam gear & 2gb located side of VC) and CPS (down on the front case). If you want to keep your 97+ CAS you will need to 1) Swap your 97+ Intake cam or 2) Drill & tap the 1g 7 bolt Intake cam for the 97+ CAS. The 1g 7bolt front case might or might not have previsions for the CPS (can buy a new one) or you can just use your 2g front case if it's still good. And yes you can make the harness you just need the pigtails.

Ok so looking at picture three what is the grey plug for if my 1g 7 bolt doesn't have a cas currently?

I think you misunderstood me though. I don't want to buy a cas that goes on the new vc, and I don't want to use the cas from my old motor. This 1g 7 bolt has to have a cas on it and I assume that it what the grey plug is for. If this is the case do I just wire it to the cas plug on my wiring harness or what?

Are you sure its a 1g 7 bolt and not a 2ga 7 bolt (95-96)? Pop off the cam gear cover and see if the CAS is bolted to the cam gear because 1st pic shows the black plug which is found on 2ga's 7 bolts. 3rd pic that looks like the Cam Sensor plug on a 95-96. But yes you have to wire it in.

Not sure because someone else picked up the motor for me and brought it down. They were closed all weekend so I will call them today and ask.

So the motor is out of a 95 Talon TSI.

Which means I either need to swap plug wires or buy a 95 Ecu correct?
