1G FWD to AWD Swap

I have looked through all the threads and have done all the reaserch to find out that this is possible to do. I currently have a 89 Laser RS Turbo that i will make into a one of a kind AWD car. I am looking to talk to people who have attempted this, wether or not the they failed it doesnt matter. If you are going to tell me im stupid or im crazy or just buy a awd shell i dont want your response, Unless you know where i can get a 1GA AWD Laser shell. Back to topic, i am going to be getting a donor car so i will have everything i need i am looking for some imput on the suspension issue, front subframe and trunk modification.

You can get a running 1g AWD for around a grand. This will cost you way more than that, so that's why everyone is going to tell you not to do it.

i have searched went through the entire drivetrain section and have found nothing other then repairs and replacements, and most people like the easy way out i want the one of a kind car. when its done it will ave a frame up restoration and conversion done to it, it was my first dsm and will be the one i keep so i am making it the way i want it to be and have the only 89 awd laser so i am willing to go through it.


right now i am looking at the front subframe first does anyone know if it is a direct bolt up or if modification is required?

Do you mean rear subframe?
The subframe (rear) won't need modification. Though you will have to cut "windows" into the rear of your car.

These will allow you to take out the FWD subframe bolts and replace them with the AWD bolts.

Edit: I'm looking into the AWD conversion on my 1G too, but from what I'm reading, the 1G's don't have the driveshaft tunnel. The 2G's do, and that's why people are doing the conversions on them. If I am wrong, will someone please correct me.

I will look at my FWD tonight and try to let you know tomorrow.

EDIT #2: I take back everything I said. I did some more research, the 1G conversion is NOT as easy as a 2G... There is no drivetrain tunnel on the 1G's...
