Right now all I have is stock 1g axles. My car is a fwd so quife lsd is in its future which will come with axle upgrades. But my question is how strong are the stock axles? My goal for the car when im done building it will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 400whp. So I know that they would not stand up long at that horsepower, but on my way up what kinda of power can they stand up to?

My stock FWD axles didnt last a quick minute with a little over 400 whp in my 1g. The drivers side will go because its so damn long. Easy fix, replace it with an AWD axle. It makes it equal length axles. Thats what i had and it lasted over a year of abuse at the track and street. The clutch broke before the axles did.:thumb:

Could you explain how you could use a shorter axle in place of the longer one to make equal length axles? From what I can see on my car a shorter one wont make it from tranny to hub.

I have put 29 000 miles on the stock(90-92) axles since I bought the cars before I change them for the bigger fwd axle.

They have seen alot of track launch and acceleration on the street.

This summer I have put around 4 000 miles with 119 mph on the street setup.

Since your car is a 94 you may already have the bigger axle so don't forget to verify that before ordering your lsd.

Some people break them with 200whp, it depends on the age of them, personally I went 126mph without any issue.

So I think that the stock axle are pretty good but it is a good thing to have a spare set.

a stock drivers side axle out if and AWD is the same length as the passenger side axle because it has an intermediate shaft. the intermediate shaft comes out of the tranny and bolts to the back of the block with a type of carrier bearing. it is a WISE investment. it also REALLY cuts down on torque steer

When I was FWD, I was using my original green cups. My car was making roughly 350 WHP for the past couple years, and 400 WHP for a bit right before I ripped all of the drivetrain out. I too had a Quaife.

They held up just fine to that abuse, and I eventually sold them to be used on another car. Being that you're FWD, your tires will break loose before an axle breaks. And at 400 WHP, your tires will break loose all the time you're on the throttle.

FYI auto zone stock replacement axles are WEAKER then factory ones.
Got proof to back this up?

(otherwise, it will be deleted)

I'm on this thread because my drivers side axle is not able to be re-rebuilt anymore.
So I go to Oreilly's and compare what they have with my stocker... guess what, the stocker axle is indeed noticeably beefier in the shaft area than the reman crap they tried to sell me. I don't know about Autozone but the ones Oreilly carries look inferior.
BTW this happened just today.

So I would need to try and find an intermediate shaft and carrier bearing? I need to do some research because I have no idea how to put that together correctly. I would love to cut down on torque steer.

EDIT: Crap VFAQ page not found!

The carrier bearing is usually found still on the intermediate shafts. Snoop around local junkyards or post a WTB ad up on here and im sure you can get one for cheap. Then you can just go to AAP or auto zone and get the AWD drivers side axle.

EDIT: THE 93-94 FWD's had bigger spline shafts going into the tranny so you have to buy upgraded ones, or an OEM one. You wont be able to even get the axle at Advance or Auto Zone because all they have is the small spline ones (90-92), i know this because i used to work there..LOL. So either DSS or OEM.
