So my question starts like this I bought my old talon tsi awd back a few weeks ago and it had a EPROM ecu but when I had it but I took the ecu out and sold it but now the kid put a non EPROM ecu from a 91 gst in it and it runs like complete crap would this be the cuase?

I moved your post to the correct forum, questions don't belong in the Tech Archives.

The general fact that the replacement ECU is from a GST and non-EPROM isn't why it's running bad.
Even if you had an automatic GST ECU and it was in a 5 speed GSX car wouldn't cause it to run like complete crap. It won't as well as it would if you have the right ECU.

It's more likely that the replacement ECU itself is bad or you don't really have a GST ECU.

What it the part number off the "new" ECU?
Have you checked it for capacitor leakage?
Can you post pictures of the ECU board including the white edge connector?

the part number on the computer is MD145903, the kid said he changed the caps so I checked it out and he did change them but the solder connection looks like hell so I'm going to fix that maybe put in new caps and then see if that works.

That's a MD145903 1990 federal turbo manual AWD ECU.
It's missing the main 5v filter capacitor C108 and while he changed the other two it doesn't look like he fixed ant of the corrosion damage the old ones caused.

In a 91 car with a 90 ECU you have to swap the pins for 6 and 14. But that ECU needs attention or you need to find a good 91/92 ECU like the AWD MD166262 or FWD MD166260

I took that one out already LOL sorry I for got to mention that, what do I need to do to fix this one, My car is a 90 tsi AWD so any information could help thanks for what you gave me already steve

The simple answer is send it to Tom and Dave at ECMTuning for repair. That way you'll know that it's been done correctly.

I don't repair them any more and I've yet to see any other places provide the same quality of work that I did or EMCTuning provides.

You can hit up Harpers just north of Ottawa on 52 in Sheridan.

(815) 695-9422

2885 E Us Highway 52, Sheridan, IL 60551

Remember if you go there to close up the doors in the cars. The get anal about that.

Other than than, they have about 9 DSMs.

Mostly all there.

I got a MD750092 and MD750093 TCU there as well as a MD166262 ECU. They sell them at $50 each.

Lincoln Truck and Auto in Bloomington has a 1990 AWD Talon, 5-spd. Last I checked, it still had it's ECU. And everything else, too. Call Mike there and see what he says: 309-828-9812. You may want to check it out anyway. PM me for directions, or whatever, if you're coming to B/N.

I just got a remanned ECU from harpers for another car. But there are a few cars still out there. So far I have only found 1 junkyard ECU that has issues. But thats my luck I guess.

The ECU that was in your car might have been altered in a way to run larger injectors etc etc. I would look at the injectors and see if they are blue tops. If they are you are good.

I had that problem with my 91 TSi Auto. The P/O had 600cc injectors in it with an SAFCII. He pulled the SAFCII out of the car when I got it and the car ran like crap till I realized what the problem was.

Any ECU or TCU with original capacitors has issues or will. That's the point I'm trying to get across.

Even if you find a perfect one, you want the caps replaced so that it stays perfect. Even the youngest DSM is now 12 years old and 1G's are 17-21. Electrolytic capacitors have a finite life and the main filter capacitors on the 1G's had a small defect, they leak corrosive electrolyte past the seals where the wire exit. They can also dry out and short, usually when you first power them up after storage.
