Hi guys,
Just got my ECMLink V3 package and I’ve been learning and reading a lot. I haven’t adjusted anything yet but got my initial stuff setup and verified.

My question is what should my timing show on ECMLink at idle?

I have verified all of my timing marks are aligned dead on the marks. With an adjustable timing light set at 5* aimed at cams (because I don’t have belt covers) my timing marks on cams are aligned spot on.

With the car warmed up my timing on ECMLink at idle is not at 5 degrees. What number should I be seeing?
Thanks

92tsi4x4,

I looked at my logs, and at idle it seems to average about 10*. It hovers between mid 8* up to about 11*, but mostly stays close t0 10*. Not sure if that correct, but the car seems to idle fine. I timed the engine with an adjustable light like you did as well. I have followed some of the write ups found on here and everything seems to be within the parameters outlined in the document. Maybe some of the more knowledgeable members can chime in on this one as well.

Thanks for the info, I’m seeing 8*-11* at idle but any little amount throttle it climbs into the 20’s. I’ve yet to do a log while driving because I want to get everything at idle dialed in first and I’m scared my timing is too high

Adjustable timing lights are not accurate when used with the waste spark ignition system on DSMs. The adjustable timing light must be set to zero and the 5 degree mark on the timing cover is used. This will be difficult to do without a timing cover.

I've looked everywhere to try and find a timing cover, not really any 1g's left in the junkyards anymore and the ones on ebay are in poor shape and cracked. any suggestions on finding a lower cover?

Hey Jim,
I'm not saying you're wrong, but when I compare the timing done with the cam sprocket markings to the timing on the cover, they line up in both instances. I have used an adjustable and verified with both. I was reading on this site and came across timing without the cover, so I decided to try it. I do have a cover, so I double checked.

See if this will work for you.

The last time I checked my timing I set the light to 0 and dialed in my timing on the crank
Then set it to 5 and double checked the cam gear marks and they were spot on
