i got a 90 talon all wheel drive. i am replacing the rear pads and when i got the old ones out and put the new ones in there was not enough room to allow 4 the brake disc. as far as i know all u are supposed to do is retract the piston all the way and voila slip the new ones in and slap it back together. am i missing something? any and all help is appreciated.

Did you manually screw in the piston, that is what I had to do, with a needle nose pliers. Mine were so tight in there that I couldnt even fit the shims and now the bastard squels. Just be sure to retract the piston all the way back and it will fit eventually, but it will be tight.

i have dont that. turned the piston all the way in with a 9/16 end wrench and a vise-grip on the end to turn it. and i can get the pads in but there is not enough room to slip the disc in. do i have to grind a little off the new pads to make it work?

i had the same problem with that before as well, took the pads back to napa they said they might have been defective, becuase my rotors were worn down, and the piston was manually screwed all the way back in and still coudln't fit the pads in :thumbdown

You can buy this think that allows u to screw the piston back it at any autoparts store. the piece is universal so all u hafta do is spin it around until it works for ur specific car. Its a good piece to buy and prolly on like 5 bucks. and prolly a lil better than the needle nose pliers. :talon:

i never thought it would have been defective pads. i just thought there have been a adjustment i missed

actually the ebrake cable on that side is broke. it snapped a while ago. had more important things to fix. would this cause the problem with the pads and caliper opening size? i have tried to force it open some more but only broke my c-clamp

did u get different ones that worked then?

I have a few sugestions for you, dont know if you did it alredy or if it will help but....
I take the old pads and use them to press evenly on the piston with a huge C clamp. If you are real desprate and dont mind a small mess, try taking off the cap to your fluid, becouse you may have too much fluid in the system for the new pad size. If your parking cable broke while it was on it may be stuck on still.

Hope that helps some,
-Jeff

rear calipers arnt just regular pistons. they are self adjusting 4 the ebrake. but yes maybe the ebrake is stuck on a little. that would cause it. but 4 the rear brakes u have to turn the piston in, and unlike the front calipers cannot just be pushed in. thanks anyway

You must be a 2G owner (Fix your profile please) because what you suggest would ruin the rear caliper when you bent the self adjuster for the parking brake on a 1G.

hah definitly ur calipers would be BYE BYE if you did that, i'd say mess with the p-brake also try opening the bleeder screw and turning the piston in a little more

it cant go in anymore. it is flush with the metal. my solution is put 1 new one on. and put one of the old ones back on. run a little bit to wear the new one down a little, then replace the old one with the new one. bad way to do it but i cant think of anything else. dont really wanna grind on the pads either

my pads were defective before, i mean alot of times they get the years mixed up and stuff at those crappy auto parts stores. i mean when the same thing happened to me my pads weren't "that" bad to begin with so i left them as is, but what i woudl do is try and get the pads from somewhere else like napa or car quest mabye see if they are any different

Guys off topic a lil... but it's freezing in chicago, my buddies 93 talon tsi is outside of my work, he got new rotors and calipers a lil while ago, and the ebrake is stuck on, we're outside and have the rear wheel (passenger off) how do we get the ebrake to release, what do you have to pry? anybody please.... THANKS GUYS!

I remember when doing my rear brakes and they didn't fit i had to loosen the ebrake and make sure the little post on the pad lined up with the hole in the piston on the caliper. That will give you an extra 1/8" or so of clearance.

hah, i know what ya mean, CHICAGO ISSSSSS FREEZING, ok to release the e brake look behind the caliper you should see a little cylinder that slides into a small bracket the cylinder is attachted to the e-brake line, i just used some pliers (with the e-brake down) and pulled that cylinder out of that bracket and my ebrake was dissconnected. if you sitll can't get it let me know i'm in schaumburg i can do it for ya.

Thanks man for the relpy, we we're going to dissconect the cable all together... but we just ended up pulling the brake straight back towards the rear of the car really appreciate the help, thanks for the Older brother help... I think my nuts are still frozen on the street outside. We're standing and he's like "oh I just hope it starts snowing." and two minutes later it did. I kicked him the groin for that. Thanks Again Guys....
