i have heard more then once, that installing aftermarket piston such as ross's on stock 1g big rods equals problems? anyone experianced this, or heard about it themselves? i am in the process of a rebuild, and know the load value of the early rods, just wondering if this is indeed true about the certain combo? and help greatly app.

stock rods are not really design for floating wrist pin. No bronze busing there on stock rods.

I was told the rods are the weakest link over 400WHP not the pistons but rods so aftermarket pistons would not be worth the $. I went with 2G pistons.

I've used 1G Big rods with my JE pistons. The rods are shotpeened and they are modified to fit the pistons.

Works fine for me.

I'm in the same position, I'm having my 6 bolt rebuilt . I'm planning on Ross pistions on my big rods. So I'd like more info on this too. I've never heard anything bad.

I also wondered if the rings Ross uses are all the same. I was told today by my machine shoop that some piston mfg have "good" rings and then they have "really good" rings.

Early stock rods are good for 450HP with ARP rod bolts. Guys run them with aftermarket pistons all the time. I would recomend having them reconditoned, shotpeened, balanced, and use the pins that came with the pistons to be installed in the rods for a pressed fit. I dont like the floating pins because of the material that needs to be removed from the stock rod weaking the small end and its more expensive to have done. When you order your pistons make sure you get the correct pin size. The 1g rods have a .827" pins.
The later 2g rods beams are not as "beafy" making them a poor canadate for a reliable motor.

Most of the guys out there will never reach the “limit” of an early 1G Rod. How many “rod failures” can you really attribute to the rod itself? If anything the rod bolts are the ones that might fail but that can be avoided if better fasteners are used.

There is no comparison between a set of Forged Pistons and the stock cast ones. Whether they will be floated or not, they will be a lot better than stock and I don’t see why would somebody have problems with them if installed right.

2000turbo I like what you have done to your car and the effort you put in your project is to be appreciated but I couldn’t help to notice that somebody kinda lied to you. Those rods do not look like they were shotpeened.
Take a look at this picture to see the difference between a rod that was shotpeened and one that was not.
