1g AWD and 1g FWD frames the same?

Will the drivetrain from a 1G awd fit in a 1G FWD? I know the 2nd gens are different but I heard the 1st gens are the same.

The frames are not the same. The AWD's have an independent rear suspension. I know there are some minor differences in the front, cause the Haynes manual shows different areas to jack the car up on. I believe there are some more in depth threads on here that you can search for, that explain what you would need to go through to convert from FWD to RWD.

The unibody frame are identical but the front and rear subframes are completely different,
in order to do a fwd to an awd swap you basically need a donor car. youll need the front subframe and crossmembers (since fwd have 1 and awd have 2) new oil pan and downpipe (becase of the transfer case), new tranny for obvious reasons, rear subframe, new suspension the mouning is different, new gas tank fwd hang too low the driveshaft will hit it. Well theres more but you basically get the idea unless its a project car you want to do something special to your better off going out and buying an awd.

You'll also have to completely cut out the hatch floor area of the fwd to make room for the saddle tank and rear diff of the awd. It can be done I'm sure, but with the current cost of awd 1g's. It'd be cheaper to just buy a shell and transfer the engine over.
