1999 GSX, clutch how long to replace?

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

GSX is a lil harder - but shops quote 8 hours. So add some time to that for first time- food, drink etc. :) If ya never done it b4 offer up a Clutch Swap party with food/beer im sure ya can get some local's to help ya out. ( always funner with 2 or more people )

I pulled my Tranny today to prepare for my ACT 2100 install, in my driveway, not at a shop or anything in 4 hours and 35 minutes.

My clutch should be here tommorow, and I will go back in with it once it arrives.

BTW, I did the removal with NO AIR tools.

Saying you had air tools, 3.5 hours would be a good time for removal.

Wish me luck for my install

gsxtacy, the install is the pain in the ass part ;)

Import, get together with some friends like Dave said, it's much more fun that way. Get a few beers (don't, for the love of God, get piss drunk and start working under your car, though), have a mini-cookout or something. I had a 'Clutch-Install Party' when I did my clutch for the first time. Total, with me one friend working 80% of the time, from start to finish the party was around 10 hours. We just hung out, watched a movie, listened to music (the necessities for a garage :D ), cooked out and drank a little beer. Fun, fun times :thumb:

Getting it all out is easy but putting it back in is a bi***. I had airtools and a lift. Took about 2 hours to get it out. About 30 minutes to an hour to get the old clutch and flywheel out and the new ones in. Then it took about another 6-8 hours to get the damn tranny back in. It was the most frustrating sob to do on my car and i have a fwd. The main problem was trying to get the tranny bolted onto the block again, it just wouldn't line up very easily.

I had a friend come over and help me lift the tranny up onto a floor jack....we slowly lifted it up.....then slipped it straight on. Must have taken 15 minutes to get it to line up and slide on. I spent two hours bolting up brackets, engine mounts, putting in the speedo sensor, and bolting on the tranfer case before I quit for the day (Damn UPS delivered my Clutch at 5:45 pm).

Getting up at the butt crack of dawn to finish up. Should have 8-9 hours total on it by the time I finish up tommorow.

When it comes time change your clutch, you might consider either buying or renting a transmission floor jack. Try to find one with a chain/strap. Your back will hurt less at the end of the day and the install will go a little quicker.
