Resolved 1998 Eclipse Spyder Engine Swap

Hello All.

I am in the process of selling my STI and will be getting a 98 Eclipse Spyder GS afterwards.

What I am interested in knowing is what engine swaps would be successful in these models.

More specifically, I am interested in swapping with a 4g63t from a wrecked Evo. Would this engine mount easily? And would the 5-Speed transmission on a GS be able to handle the extreme increase in HP?

Any suggestions on engine swaps or tuning would be great. Although I am really interested in doing an Evo swap, I am open to anything.

The 4g63 of an Evo WON'T work. It mounts on the opposite side, you can do a 6 bolt swap from a 1st gen or a 7 bolt 4g63t from a 1995-99 turbo Eclipse. Go through this website, there's a lot of info for the Spyder GS.

Does the Evo engine mount correctly with any of the GS models?

Any EVO motor doesn't mount into any DSM easily. It will mount into a 3g Eclipse but with a good amount of fabrication. I suggest holding out for a turbo DSM.

You're better off just finding yourself a nice Spyder GST

Being that buying a GST is not really an option, seeing how the difference between what I owe on my STI and my payoff is about 3-4K...

Is a GST motor swap a better idea than turbo charging the stock engine? Being in the car business I have people who will do labor cheap, if not for free. So I am not too concerned about that.

Well if your payoff is only 4k you wouldn't have enough to swap to anything else anyways. I'm telling you, the most cost effective way to to have a turboed DSM is to just by one in the first place. You'll end up spending thousands more swapping later.
And on a side note, why are you getting rid of the STI? Those things are beasts =)
