I've seen quite a few posts of the problem I'm having yet none answering the question I actually have.

I recently purchased a 1997 Eclipse Spyder GST
Engine: 4G63 Turbo
Front Wheel Drive
Automatic

I'm not sure what the transmission model is, when I bought the car it had some transmission issues. I had to drive it with the over drive off, and it wouldn't shift into 4th, so had to drive it home in 3rd gear at 4k RPM for about an hour and a half.
The problem I thought it was having it just needed a new transmission fluid and filter. I changed those ((it doesn't nor has it ever leaked tranny fluids))

When I drive it with over drive on, it was shifting normally until it tried to hit 4th gear then it seemed to slip as if it went into Neutral. When I changed the transmission fluid and filter I also put in 15 fl oz of Transx The old transmission fluid was dark almost brown, but no metal shavings on the magnets in the transmission pan, a mechanic across the street looked at it, said that's perfectly normal and you would definitely know if it was internal as there would be a huge pile up of fine metal shards.

So I start looking into Solenoids, now this for me is where I'm lost. I know the shifting solenoid would also cause the issues I am having, but I'm unsure if it even IS the solenoid or a different problem.

If it IS the Solenoid what Solenoid am I getting.

Like I said my car is a GST Spyder with a 4G63 Engine, automatic front wheel drive.

Any information as soon as possible would be greatly appreciated, driving around maxing in 3rd gear is burning a whole in my pocket in gas.

Basically the question is. O'riellys which is the first one, which is what I thought was called a shifter box, or the second one which I thought was only for manual transmissions.

Had exact same problem in my 97 Spyder Gst... Changed the End Clutch kit never had problem again.... Very easy to do and pretty cheap! Good luck!

Someone else also suggested this, googled end clutch kit, and seen descriptions under the link of people sayin it restored their 4th gear and overdrive. So I'm havin a strong feeling this will also fix my issue, gonna go ahead and pick this one up.

Guy on the customer service phone for the link below said the 4th gear is basically the overdrive? My car feels like it slips into neutral when it hits 4th gear with over drive ON. Can anyone else elaborate?

My 97 GST spyder is doing the same thing, i replaced the end clutches and the solenoids, but i still no overdrive. Anyone know of another cause to this problem?

This was a while ago, I forgot to come back when I fixed the issue.
The end clutch kit from

Fixed the issue on that on my last Spyder, on the current one, having a little more difficulties than an end clutch. I have overdrive now, after replacing the end clutch, but sometimes it seems to slip out and it always makes a whining sounds while in drive in all gears. Trans fluid is a little darker, not metallic or anything though.
