1997 Eclipse GST

Hi everyone, I'm new to dsmtuners, I just purchased a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse GST with a thrown rod for $350, is there anyway i can fix this? If there isn't a hole in the block, i can rebuild right? and if there is a hole in the block, i can just get a new block and build a motor. I just don't know where to start. All tips and tricks, advice, etc is highly appreciated. I just really want a hobby, and this sounds like something really fun to do.

you will have to buy a new one...and you might want to check the head in case there's any damage also..

Yes. If there is a broken rod you will be even better off to just but a good running engine from someone (cheaper) or find one that needs to be rebuilt. You will already need a new crank and likely have damage to the block. If you are interested in a good usable block with a fresh hone job than pm me.

Welcome! If the body is in good shape, you got yourself somewhat of a deal. I've rebuilt a couple of DSMs over the years now and its honestly not that bad. Motors come and go but bodies....now that's the hard part! Good luck on your build!

You got a great deal. Paid 1k for mine with rod knock. If it truly broke a rod id say salvage what you can and get a nice fresh block to start on with a new crank and all the internals. Machine shops or some vendors or folks on here will be glad to do the work.
Oh, just a piece of advice: Build the engine to handle 700hp so youre not taking it apart again and paying double. Just overdo everything, trust me, youll save so much time and money cause you WILL want to run this car hard. HP is an evil drug, keeps ya comin back for more...

It needs a new front bumper, but i wouldn't want the stock one anyways, ill find a nice new body kit for it eventually. My main goal is just getting it running. It also needs a backseat, which isn't a hard find. I found a tan leather set of front seats and backseat for $35.

This is kind of silly advise. Most people with these cars will never make more horsepower than what the stock bottom end can handle.

Yeah, I doubt I'll need that much horsepower ever. I think 350-450 would be mighty nice.

Just my advice bryan, ive never pushed a stock bottom end 4g so i dont know exactly how much it can handle. Im just saying that everyone ends up wanting more power. I think its very solid advice, why wouldnt you build something to handle more than what youre going to throw at it?? Just makes it more reliable and gives you room to grow just IN CASE
Were not taling a 3k dollar difference either, its not alot more to use better rods and pistons.....
