i have seen so many threads about speaker sizes but i would like to supply a bit more info on my specific car to see if i can get a more specific answer.

the stock radio doesnt work anymore and i want to replace it and the speakers. i have a 1995 eagle talon esi but i read that the base mofel only came with 4 speakers but mine has the dash speakers in it, in the corners and it has the CD player, does this mean i have the upgraded system? i would like to have 6.5s in the doors and 6x9s in the back with no sub/amp. i am not really concerned with the tweeter in the dash since they are hard to change.

also, any info on removing the door panels and rear seat panels to get to the speakers would be great, i cant find a good guide on removing the panneling.

The back speakers are 6X9. The front ones are 6 inches. I put 6.5 inchers in the front of mine but cutting away at the holder for the stock speakers. The door panels are easy to remove, just take a screw driver to the screws and remove them. There is on behind the handle and one in that dip below the handle. Then just pull on the panel, there will be a couple tough spots where its stuck, take a flat head and use it to carefully pry it off. Be careful when doing this as stuff like the break. As for the back seat panels, I haven't done those so I'm not sure how exactly to do those. Just look around and carefully poke around and you should be fine.

Back Seat panels are easy to take off,
1) remove the bottom seat cushion
2) remove the back seat part, one screw on each side underneaath where the cushion would be
3)look at the rear panels on the bottom corner nearest the door, there should be a screw there, take it out
4)not sure if there any other screws maybe one more on the other side of the panel, otherwise just find a hold on the side an top and pull gently

Let me run out to my car and get some pictures

There is a cover piece with a screw in the middle here but I dont have it on at the moment

Then I just pull gently at the edges and it should come off, then you just have to disconnect the window control module

Your are wrong the back speakers are 6 1/2's. Apparently you wouldnt know since you've never taken off the back panel. The rears can fit 6X9's but you going to have to do some cutting to get them to fit. To get 6X9's to fit is pretty easy and can be done with less than 5 minutes of cutting. If you take off the back panel you will see what I'm talking about on what needs to be cut. You will most likely need a dremel to cut the plastic to get them to fit.

ive heard of people having 6.5s and 6x9s in the same generation as mine and the same model, esi. my car might have the upgraded stereo system in it as an option cause it sounded pretty good when it did work for a few minutes. LOL.

i guess there is no way to tell except rip out the panels and find out. when i save some money i will do it before i buy my speakers.

thanks guys. the pics really help a lot and will save me money on the installation process.

6x9's will fit in the rear with modification. I know cause I did. All you have to do is trim the plastic mount wider and then depending on the depth of the speaker you may have to flatten a little bit of your tire well to make them go all the way in

thanks alot,
what is a good speaker brand for smaller spaces? i like infinity speakers personally cause i had them in my previous car.

also, any tips on removing the stock interior and how well do the aftermarket radios fit? i know i will need an adapter to accomadate for the extra space but are the speaker wire connections pretty much universal?

Yes whoever said Talon's have 6x9s are WRONG. They MIGHT have 6x9s. Assuming he has the base model ESI with nothing, meaning no Infinity sound (amp under passenger seat) chances are he has 6.5s stock. Most GSTs/GSXs if not all of them are fully loaded meaning the Infinity sound is there, so for us, we think its standard 6x9s.

Again that is not the case, with Talons, even the turbo models can opt for the regular stereo package, which is more common from my findings in reality. (I install a lot of car audio on 2g DSMs)

The mounts are still the 6x9s but have a 6.5" adapter which is really nice. I personally would go with these. I've just found the circular speakers to sound better to me.

Chances are if you look under the passenger seat there is a harness there by itself not ocnnected to anything. That is the harness for the infinity amp. If you want an upgrade, you can find someone who will give the stock infinity amp for free. Or if you are going to wire new after market amps, and dont want to run new wire to all the speakers, that harness houses all the leads for all the speakers INCLUDING the dash speakers/tweeters.

I've tried just about all possible combination in 2g audio wiring, from ghetto to done the right way. That harness under the seat to all the speakers makes things so much easier. But if you just plan to have deck power, the simple harness behind the stereo will feed your speakers, but your dash speakers may not work--probably wont. Do a search I believe there is a post on the wiring, but it might be what I already mentioned.

removing the interior is a piece of cake. I just hate how the doors are mostly held on by those plastic clips that tend to break or get lost. Buying expensive speakers like infinitys you can't go wrong, but most of the time they ask for high RMS power that no deck--cheap or $500 can provide. You'll need separate aftermarket amp power to hear the high dollar price tag that you paid for them. So keep that in mind.

i had pioneer 5900 MP3 deck unit that put out 50 watts rms for each of the 4 channels with 2 5.25s in the front and 2 6.5s in the back and they sounded pretty nice, that was in my old car. i will be going with just the deck power for now but i might upgrade later. i believe the speakers i was looking at were 100watts rms, maybe 150. i liked the infinitys but i want to try to fit in some 6x9s cause a friend of mine had them and they seemed to handle bass better than the small speakers do. i probably wont need a sub if i can get 6x9s in the car. i do like bass, but for my style of music, its not really necessary.

i hope to save the rest of the money for my stereo system within a few paychecks and then i will finally have a radio in my new car :)

thanks a lot guys

50 watt RMS x 4? on a mid-level brand name deck, I would like to see that, hell I would like to see a top of the line deck that puts out close to that much RMS per channel. I can show you however decks that fool the consumer to thinking its 200 watt max with 50watt MAX x 4 when in reality its only 15-22 max rms---all decks, from cheap to expensive, from brand name to no brand name. :)

Actually the top of the line expensive decks I've seen don't even have built in amplifier because it's intended to make use of the high level preouts for external amps

The enclosure in the rear of the 2g for the 6x9 sucks, its not really sealed and the sound output, most obvious the bass, is well to put it, below average. If you seal it up well it might improve. Also the mounting depth is limited, and if you are getting some Infinity's or other reputable brand, chances are you will have to modify or hack the mount/wheel well. If you have 6.5 mounts in your 2g, I would stick with them. They have sounded much nicer to my ears.

i just think that they handled bass really well. i might have pinoeer 6x9s in teh back cause thats what he had and infinity 6.5s in the front cause i really like those from my old car.

i figured that the ratings on the radios from the factory werent exact, but pioneer claims 50 watts per channel

makes sense, thanks.

i hope to do some more research on speakers this time. i am not limited as much as i was last time for choices and i am doing the installation myself so i can save money for hardware. :)
