I think that is the route I am going to take. Do the full rebuild not just do a cheap fix of the first two gears.

I am under the impression the Transmission is from a 91-92 AWD. But maybe I should just open it first then I will know what kit to buy?
Not a bad idea. Although no sense in throwing money into synchros and bearings, etc if they aren't bad. It adds up pretty quick. Bearings are especially expensive right now too. Just the input shaft upper bearing was over $100 alone from jacks because it's NLA. Others are around $30.

Yeah I'd open it first.. it should be pretty easy to tell which it is right as soon as you get the bearing plate off. If it's got 2 holes for the 3/4 shift fork then it's a 90-92.5, if it's got 3 then it's a 93+.

To determine if it's a 90 or 91 you'll need to look at the center diff or output pinion. IIRC 90 uses an opposite facing gear angle than 91+? I'll see if I can find my link to Tim's post that explains the differences.

This should explain pretty easily with which gearset you have.

I'd definitely learn from Anfurnyy's recent situation where he got the wrong year parts on accident.

Ya'll keep motivating me to try to rebuild a manual trans myself as well. Wonder how hard it is to modify 1st and 2nd for double synchros on a 90 trans.
Modify? Or change parts to do it? To retain 90 parts you have to machine gears. To just do it you need to change the intermediate shaftt to a 91. If you change to 92 up inter.ediate then you need a 92 up center diff also. Plus the 2nd gear, hub sleeve etc

I think he just means modify 2nd gear for double synchro.

The Jacks rebuild kit includes machine work for your 1st and 2nd, so I think when/if the time comes I'll just do that. It's a little pricy at like $1200, but eh. Better than $2k plus.
