Okay guys... here's something messed up. I bought a tranny used from a guy and he claimed it's a 1990. Well, in another thread I had stated it must not have been a 90 tranny because the splines didn't match up and it had 23 instead of 22 as a 90 should. So I was all freaked out because I figured I'd have to not only buy a new transfer case but the shift linkage, shifter assembly and everything as well. But just to do some checking I decided to measure the shifter control arm on my old tranny and on this newer one i just bought... THey are EXACTLY the same. Why would this tranny fit my shifter assembly and everything but be a 23 spline?

Oh and also.. he still claims he took it right out of his 90 talon tsi.

So please, this is buggin the crap outta me, can anyone explain this?

Yeah... it's just kinda stupid. I mean I honestly believe it was rebuilt or something... just this guy is making it so confusing. Oh well. Just gotta get a transfer case now.

anyone selling a 23 spline transfer case?

yeah... I'm not having too good of a time having people respond to my emails on the trader, nor do many of them say how many splines or what years their transfer cases are. Oh well, I'll find something.

I live in Eagle, about an hour northwest of Kenosha (burb of muckwaunego) and I have both 90 and 91 style transfer cases for sale. They are in excellent shape. $150/choice

It could still be the original tranny someone could have swapped the output shaft. It can be done with the tranny in the car so you could put ypour 22 back in it if you wanted to.

Take the side cover off the transmission, take the snapring off the viscous coupling, take off the viscous coupling, take note as to where the tiny ball bearing goes, then pull the output shaft out from the backside of the transmission. Installation is the reverse of removal :D
