14b with 20g wheel

Would a 14b with 20g compressor wheel even fit/work? Would it be a good idea with such a small turbine wheel? I have a 14b with beat up compressor wheel but's still good and I have the option of buy a 20g comp. wheel.
 
There are TD05H-20G's. They're usually the 20G's that are less expensive than the larger TD06-20G's.

A TD05H-20G and a TD05H-14B are essentially the same turbocharger, except for the machining on the compressor housing and the compressor wheel.
 
What kind of numbers do you think it will put out? Obviously more than an EVO 16G. Anyone have a TDO5H 20G?
 
The O5H 20g will usually make in the area of 325-350whp, depending on the application. Alot of people used to machine the compressor cover and throw in the 20g wheel in years past, after the 14b comp wheel ate somthing for breakfast. Now, the cost of the process is almost as much as buying a complete turbo, like the evo 16g, when you take into account machining costs, the cost of the wheel, and balancing. Personally the only 20g I would run is the TDO6H version.

Well.. Using the 14b compressor cover wont work. Unless you plan on sleeving the cover inlet.There isnt enough wall thickness to machine out for that size of wheel. Usually the TDO5H 20gs are made by machining a 16g comp cover. If you want to be real sly.. Just built the TDO6H 20G and machine the 16g cover and have it restamped with 14B numbers.. :thumb:

I've heard of there being a 25g turbo, do you guys happen to vendor that? Sorry I didnt check the site.
 
A 16G compressor cover is the same as a 14B right? 16G is just pre-machined to accept a larger wheel.

No there isnt enough meat in the cover to make it.. it would be so paper thin.. you need to use an EVO compressor cover to make it work. Even though they look like the same cover they arent, they have minor differences.

Yes a big cover will work.. Yes the TDO5 will spool faster than the O6H version for sure!! depends on if you have fuel control.. The turbo is capable of running 21-22 psi on pump gas with 550s afc and a 255. The TDO6H version will need 650s though

Oh, another thing that should be mentioned - using a 20G wheel with a 6cm^2 housing from a 14B doesn't seem worth it, IMO. It would likely choke the exhaust flow before you'd be able to get into the upper efficiency range of the 20G wheel.

Sounds as if converting a 16G w/ a 7cm^2 turbine housing would be much more worthwhile than converting a 14B, since the compressor housing would need to be swapped and the turbine housing would be a desirable swap.
 
How much does having a tdo5 vs an 06 affect running more boost? Seems like if using an 05 cover helps spool it has to hurt somewhere else.

It's the top-end where it lacks. The TD06 has a larger wheel, and usually has an 8cm^2 turbine housing. It takes more exhaust to get the wheel moving and won't have as much velocity at lower RPMs, but will flow more exhaust and be more efficient on the top-end. It's similar to running a 2.5'' exhaust vs. a stock exhaust on an N/A car.

The TD05H will have a 7cm^2 turbine housing and a smaller wheel. The wheel is more efficient with less exhaust flow and the turbine housing allows slightly more exhaust velocity at lower RPMs, but will be more of a restriction at higher RPMs.
