Alright, I am putting back together a 13g turbo for my 91 gst. My brother was suppose to do it for me but he took it apart and never got back around to it. I got most of it together but I noticed on the blueprint in the site below there is a heat shield in between part 6 and part 19. I had two 13g turbos and one rebuild kit to begin with. I got all the parts here in a box from my brothers and I don't have a single heat shield. I need to know if the 13g even has a heat shield to begin with? And if it does, would it hurt anything if I ran the turbo without one? I just need the turbo to run until spring when I plan on looking for and rebuilding a 14b. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The heat shield not only acts like a heat barrier helping to prevent oil from coking around the turbine seal, but it also helps to shim the turbine housing properly on certain turbos- especially some larger Garretts. Not sure I'd gamble a rebuild on running no heat shield....then again, it's only a 13G. LOL

Thanks for the insight. I'm not too worried about the coking since I am only using it for roughly 3 months and it's being installed on a freshly rebuilt engine. As far as the clearance goes (if the heat shield acted as a shim or not), if the turbine nut isn't at least finger tight the exhaust side of the turbine rubs the housing. So I'm guessing that doesn't apply to the 13g. I think I'm going to take a chance with it and hope for the best, I mean you said it best, "it's only a 13g" haha. Thanks again.
