Took a look around the forums, and I decided I'm going to change my transmission fluid in hopes of removing a grind in 3rd gear. The grind happens at all rpms, although it is far less severe if I double clutch and rev-match, or if I slam the gear quickly at higher rpms.

With that said, it's obviously a synchro issue, and I'm hoping that better fluid will alleviate the problem. Based on the forum, I've decided to use 75w90 synchromesh (most likely pennzoil, going to talk to my mechanic to see what he can get for me, as I'm changing my slave cylinder and going to just have him do the change while it is there), and I just want to ensure that 75w90 synchromesh is going to have the highest chance of getting rid of the grind. The transmission is an original 5-speed (420A engine), with just over 110k on it.

Any further suggestions would be appreciated.

BG synchroshift do a very good job with old tranny to help shift better. Synchromesh is more suited for a new/rebuilt tranny.

Is it available locally at like autozone or am I going to have to order it online?

How many quarts do I need? I've seen some places online sell it in 3-quart quantities for the AWD setup. Since I don't need to fill a transfer case, do I need the third quart, or will 2 be fine?

Check your manual or ask at the parts counter for them to look for your trans fluid capacity under specifications. Mine took about 4.

its good for old and new

Well I decided to go with penn synchromesh. Headed down the the mechanic now to have him do my slave cylinder and change this fluid while it's there. Probably won't get done until tomorrow, I'll be sure to let you know how 3rd gear is after this :)

go with syncroshift(3 bottles) it is very good stuff, and redline shockproof heavy (2 bottles) for your xcase/Rdiff, it is what i use and is very nice, synthetic and great durability with heat/ for that grind it might help alil but your case sounds kinda bad, good luck bud
:dsm: sleepy gsx :dsm:

p.s. get it from rre they are good people...
