I'm doing a turbo project with a 91 GS Eclipse. I am told that it's a 1.8L, and all of the turbo manifolds I can find are for 2.0L. Any idea if the 2.0L manifolds will bolt up to the 1.8L head, if it in fact is a 1.8L engine?

Thanks,
-Rob

A 2.0L manifold will not fit a 1.8L. The 1.8 is a SOHC and 2.0 is a DOHC. The 1.8L is rated at 96HP, putting a turbo on it will kill your engine in the long run, unless you put a tiny turbo or beef up the internals. IF you do decide to turbo it, you'll have to custom make a manifold for the 1.8L to fit a turbo on it.

I had a 1.8L Eclipse GS for 2 years, I sold it and got a 2.0L turbo GSX. IF you really want power on a 1.8, I would recommend getting an open air filter, catback exhaust, test pipe, downpipe and maybe a 50 shot of dry nitrous.

why dont you just swap on the dohc head....the hyundai 1.8 dohc is the exact same thing as a 2.0l dohc the only difference is the used a 1.8 block.but im pretty sure you will have to change pistons because of the xtra valve reliefs.but i think the turbo big rods will fit into your engine too.

bullsh*t! they use the same head gasket! look it up at napa online or go to a parts and ask to look at both....only the pistons are different

why would you want to put a 2.0 dohc head on a sohc engine block ?? this doesn't make any sense... what timming belt would you use ? the 2.0 ignition runs off of coils the 1.8 runs off a distributer the only way you could get by that is swapping for a 2.0 wireharness then ecu, then because u swaped that what about your other sensors? you'd have to swap the maf sensor and upgrade the injectors.. after all this doesn't this sound like a waste??? you might have a dohc motor and alot of custom work but you have a 1.8l block which what some people THINK is weak, which also has a smaller bore than the 2.0. then by adding the extra hp from the better flow head the block will prolly have to be rebiult, why not bore it out and add some 2.0 pistons, hey might as well the engine prolly won't run right without them.. now what about rods??.. after all this you'll still have less hp than if you just dropped a 2.0 in and alot less work!!! after all this why not drop a 2.0 in your not that far off ??? does anybody else get what i'm saying ??

You read my mind before I got to your poost. I know what your saying though

JDM made twin cam 1.8's they also made 1.6's double overhead cam and they were both turbo engines wheres the bit that you cant turbo a 1.8??????. and there's no dissy in either of them

NO.

THEY DON'T.

If you don't know who you're talking to, ask somebody.

There are advantages to a 1.8. Lighter rotating assembly means AOTBE it will rev higher. It is a non-interference motor, so if your timing belt snaps, you just adjust the timing marks and put a new belt on.

On an off-note, people on this forum REALLY need to stop telling people "Sell xx and buy yy." when someone has a question. Could there be something better suited for what they want? Yes, but it doesn't mean it's the *only* solution. Like the rules say, answer the question, link to the answer, or don't reply.

Back on topic, I can't remember where, but someone else did a thread about turboing a 1.8. If you can dig that up, I seem to remember a big QUALITY writeup on it. That'd be a good place to start.

The guy that wrote that big writeup posted the pics of the head gaskets :shhh:

that would be ginsu417 the one that just posted the pictures of the headgaskets ;)

I must say the 1.8L engine can not handle the turbo. A friend had pulleys intake and headers and fried his rings in 3 weeks. DON'T DO IT FOR THE LIFE OF THE CAR

UHhhhhh, Those mods wouldn't have a thing to do with his rings going.....

I dont see why people are so bitchy when people mention the 1.8L. The 2.0 is great but it has a shit load of downsides, alot more then the 1.8L. Actually i laughed at a 2.0 yesterday when a b16 CIVIC SI made it look like the dsm was moving in reverse. but that dont matter what matters is that the 1.8l can be just as good, and becasue its a sohc its a bit safer if the timing belt breaks...less shit to break. Ive got respect for ginsu and his little 1.8 not becasue its probly one of the quickest 1.8s but becasue its and engine that comes without a turbo, and no one has ever tried to stick a turbo on it (everyone claims the 'next month i will have a ####ing skyline twin turbo on my 1.8) n hes the only one that took time to think about the engine, and the past cars that were made by mitsu/dodge and he found 'the key to the mystery', the turbo colt/mirage. And he actually completed the whole process of turboing his car

Im going to attempt at this 1.8L turboing thing...sometime when i get the money for it but for now dont diss the 1.8L becasue ill be laughing at your car on the side of the road with a thrown timing belt (2.0ers) when im screaming past you.

BTW dont bother with dohc heads

I wish my 1.8 was still non-interference... :( At least the t-belt's easier to change than on my GSX. :D

What do you mean by that?

I'd love to turbo my 1.8, but I don't think I ever will now...
