Has anyone ever heard of replacing just the bottom crank bearings? Talked to buddy who's doing this with his engine still in the car, doesn't want to pull the tranny or front engine components,so he is just replacing the bottom bearings.

I told him he would be better off leaving them alone, then doing half a set.......

I wouldn't say it's the correct way but I've done this on main bearings when installing a fresh set of rod bearings and never had any problems.

That seems like a horrible idea. If I was that lazy and needed to replace bearings, I'd just run the motor in the ground before replacing just half a set, then kick myself in the ass for being so lazy.

Leave them alone, or replace all of the bearings at once.

You can replace just half of the bearings if you have free time. Not going to make a difference on the positive or negative side. If you want to do them right, and still be lazy, get the engine warmed up, then drop the pan. pull the 1,2,4,5 man caps down, (yes I know they are connected 1-2, 4-5) and you can roll in and out new upper bearings. get a number 3 flat head screw driver and push away from the tang. You can litterally turn the crankshaft and pust and the bearing will roll out. then you just roll them back in. FYI if you want to do all of them, If your super lazy do just half.

If i got to that point i would take the extra time to take the trans off and replace all the main bearing . It dosent sound good putting a half set of brand new profile bearings , with the other half being worn so not making a perfect circle cradle for the crankshaft to sit in. that could lead to pre mature bearing failure.
