Hey what's up guys? So I did some searching in regards to getting a UDP for my cousin's 98 GS and it seems as if you guys are torn between the OBX and AF/X pulleys. He wants me to change his pulley for him but I just need some insight on which one to go with, experiences with each, links where to get them and any negative effects from each. I searched ebay and it seems as if they only have pulleys for turbo guys. All help will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Agreed. This is the standard by which other UDPs are judged. I've had mine something like three years now without any issues. Great mods. I don't think I would trust anything OBX bolted to my crankshaft. :|

Agreed, agreed. I've put about 40k on mine and am confident enough with it that I put it on the new engine. One out-of-balance pulley can ruin your whole day (and engine ;) ). Great mod but don't cheap out on this one.

Incidentally, no belt noises or problems on my behalf.

I went with an unothodox UP... everything they make is PERFICT although maybe more expencive than most; but for your crank you just don't want to mess around. It helped ALOT!!! defenatly worth getting, whichever brand you buy.

Thanks for all the help guys. Only downside to this is that the AF/X is expensive but no problem, I dont think he wants to take a chance with his motor.I'll try to see if I can get it for less than $140 though, if anybodyelse has a cheaper source please let me know.

It's a $140 that's very worth it... :thumb:

Defintely one of the best mods for the money :rocks:

I went with the unorthodox one as well. If you think the afx one is too high, then don't bother with this one.

Major differences between the two is the unorthodox pulley is a 20% underdrive and lighter than the afx unit. The afx is 30% underdrive, but a little heavier.

Well I've got a question for the long term users (of UDP's). Have you guys noticed any tapering or out of round crankshaft journals? I was thinking about putting a UDP on but I'm not familiar on how well Chrysler balances their rotating assembly.

I've got a 1.8l VW (mk2 jetta) motor that was completely balanced from factory and does not have a harmonic dampener. It's the only engine I've ever worked on that doesn't have one, so I'm just paranoid about damaging my baby. :)

Lots of r&d went into the AF/X UDP before it was released I'm sure, and there are plenty of us who have been running them for some time now with no probs.

ya, I wasnt going to be cheap on when I got one. I understand af/x and unorthodox makes well made products, but I was questioning crysler. I guess I should of said, "how well balanced is the 420a rotating assembly from factory?"

sorry. But from the posts I read, it seems like its within a tolerable range, and the engine wont rattel its self to death, LOL

So, I helped him install the pulley yesterday (AF/X of course, ordered it from Howell Automotive). Install was a bi*** even with the special pulley tool that I used. It just seemed like the pulley didn't want to come off. After install he went for a test drive and told me that he instantly felt the difference. He was very happy he spent the $152 and said that it's the best $152 he spent on his car so far. Thanks guys for all the info and help.

Glad we could help.....that's the kinda shiznit we like to hear about :thumb:

I'm happy he likes it and he chose the AF/X. To tell the truth, the results that you got are pretty much standard for those that do the switch. As you found out, it is actually worth the $.

Just a note about the pulley removal and install. It becomes easier as you do more. And you learn little tricks. I have a trick for removal that requires heat but I won't go through that on here because I'm afraid that some people will try it and melt things. But to put the pulley on put that sucker in the oven; works great. About 5-10 minutes @250 and it goes on so much easier (don't forget to lithium grease the crank shaft end).

Anyhow, glad to hear the results.
