I've seen some advertisements from Wyotech. They do seem promising but what other automotive school ads don't portray the same thing? Anyway, I browsed on the site and didn't see anything that had to do with how much it cost to attend Wyotech. I'm guessing it's alot since they don't have it up.

What's the skinny? What have you guys heard about Wyotech? Good bad?

Is it wise to take out a huge loan that will go into effect when your schooling is over? Especially something that has to do with Auto Tech / Body Customization where you're not guaranteed a high paying job after your schooling is finished?

Are these jobs offered at this school in high demand or will I feel like I have wasted all my money, have a huge loan taken out and will struggle paying it back.

I am taking online classes right now but they aren't sufficient. I'd rather have hands on experience. ( I work on my car but I use it as a daily driver for work so I can only do small projects. ) I just want to get some schooling under my belt and get my life into gear. I've always been into cars and feel like I can do this for the rest of my life. Not just auto tech but customization.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Oh man, Is it ever... I have been researching it. My dad is a Principle at a college and knows the president of the wyotechs, I can get in at next to nothing. But from what she told me, the average right out of school wages were 65,000 dollars a year. i recomend, i will be there in a year or two (not sure about a year break in bewtween) :dsm:

65,000?!?!?! That is insane!

Well April 4th I am taking 3 months of ASM (Applied Service Management), 6 months of Collision Refinishing, and 3 months of Trim and Upholstry, and thats only 20k

I toured the main campus there in Laramie and loved the place. The campus is huge and all the equipment seemed new. The shops are spotless and the staff is very friendly. Everything you learn is there is hands on. Usually on the second day of class you're in the shop. Student to teacher ratio is about 30 students per every teacher and with night classes 15 students per teacher.

Job placement over the past several years is at 98%, so I don't think you'll need to worry about finding work afterwards unless you just dicked off for the entire year.

Best thing to do would be is find some time and go tour the place. You can call and a Wyotech rep will come out to your house and discuss everything with you.

And I wont say anything about the imcompetent douche reps for UTI, except I havent had any good experiences with them.

~Edit. My first year consisting of Applied Service Management, Collision Refinishing, and Trim & Upholstry is 20k.

The second year, should I chose to go, is 26k. That is 3 Months of High Performance Engines/Chassis fabrication, 6 months of Automotive Technology, and 3 Months of HotRod Customization which is chopping tops, suicide doors, fabricating body panels ect.

A branch Campus is in West Sacramento. It should be real simple just to go take a tour, and its free.

no. its not all hands on. at best its 60% lab/30%shop. some classes its more like 70/30. you are not in the shop the second day of class, unless its for shop orientation, and thats only an hour. if you're lucky, you'll hit the shop the second week of the phase. night classes are usually as full as day classes. its 3 teachers to like 50 kids.

the wyotech reps aren't any better than uti in my opinion. they're all getting paid to do the same thing. i talked to both and toured both.

if you're just going to school to be a basic tech at a shop or dealership, just go to a community college. if you want the chassis fab/hipo or street rod, then go to a specialized school. asm is nothing that you can't get from a community college business course, just faster. last i heard they were talking about making asm 6 months instead of 3. the reason i didn't like uti was the lack of a chassis program, thats what makes wyotech more appealling. that, and its a larger campus. wyoming techs high performance class is outdated at best. they don't discuss building or modifying dohc engines. their turbo section is one paragraph. they teach you that a properly set up carburetor is just as good as an equally sized fuel injection set up. :barf:

curious as to how i know this? i spent 9 months in beautiful wyoming. and before you go saying im some "dick off" i graduated with an 88% overall with perfect attendance.

and don't even get me started on wyotech housing services. if you go there, don't live in their housing.

Allright, right now i am going to wyotech in laramie and all i have to say is its the most retarded thing ive been through in my life. Seriously save your money and go somewhere else. If you talk to anybody that goes here right now and they will tell you exactly the same thing. I have been here for 6 months and have not learned shit. The rules and the management in this fu*king school is the worst i have ever seen. I would never recommend this school to anyone. Oh and don't believe anything the reps say to you, myself and everyone that i have talked to that goes here will tell you that all they say is lies. The management here are just on a huge power trip and love to push you to your limit. I can honestly point you hundreds of people that feel the same way. Please save your money and look elsewhere.

Also if you do decide to come here do not live in wyotech housing, you are not allowed to have girls on the property and if you are cought with any type of car part, alchohol or if you are drunk on the property you will be immediatly be kicked out. They also do room checks every2 weeks to see if you have anything what they would call innapropriate in your room (alcohol even if you are 21, swimsuit posters, car parts, magizines, tools, ect).

Me and all of my classmates feel like we are in grade school again because that is the way we are treated, (I am just waiting for them to add naptime to our schedule). Laramie is also a shitlhole of a town so beware.

If you want you can message me for details/questions

I am not the type to complain but please let this sink in and save yourself the hassles and frustration of being a slave to this rediculus school. :thumbdown

I checked into wyotech and it was like 22k. A friend told me most all he does is sit around doing bong rips....
If you're real lucky maybe you can find a shop to do an "apprenticeship" at....

I have to ask my friends but I have two that have been through and grauduated. One has walked on to three good jobs in the performance sector. One was Arizona Speed and Marine and the latest is Extreme Engineering. In his current job he does alot of install, tunning and diagnoses for higher end vehicle. TT Vette;s mostly, but alot of N2O and SC applications on a variety of vehicles. From what he said all of them gave him about a 45 minute interview and he had the job. I will aks them what they think of the school and what they learned.

I was also thinking of doing something similar. I, however, wanted to go to School of Automotive Machinist (SAM), but just like you I am skeptical of the school and job placement. My plan is to call some of the places I would like to gain employment and find out directly from them were they get a majority of ther employee's. I would also like to know there take on some of these schools.

man im going to city college of san francisco and im taking automechanics classes.... this is my first year and i took my intro to auto mechanics, and now im taking auto and manual transmissions... every course in this school is aimed right at getting ASE certified.. my trans teacher is gonna give us 40 bucks if we get an a or b in his class and dont pass the ase test... all you really need to be is ase certified because that says a lot about you... i bought 1 book for 75 bucks and its good for all the classes and ill be done in 2 years with a degree in automechanics... i got to class 3 days a week for 4 hours (30 min break) and its like 2 1/2 hours in the shop and about an hour in the classroom... real good teachers and facility and its a lot of fun... i will be able to get a good job after this just gotta find one... anyways ... check out your local community college they might have a similar program that leans towards the criteria of getting ASE certified....
hey nobody flame me for being in community college.... im broke and im pretty sick of academic classes, but i think sleep drink eat cars all day long... cant get em off of my mind (especially dsm's ;) )
all im sayin is this is a cheaper way to do it and ill have certification in like 5 areas after im done with school

happy boostin and good luck with school

My brother goes to WyoTech.... he deffinatly was very disappointed at first. Since you start with the basics and theory. He likes going there now. The good thing about wyotech is the teachers have all been in the business for ever and they know what they are doing.

The best thing to do is get a job as a shop monkey for a good shop that knows their shit.

You should always listen to the people who went to the school not the people who are paid to push it. I went to Wyotech a couple of years ago and i wish I never did not that I did bad in the school or anything actually I did quite well but they only teach you the basics (which you can get out of any car magazine) and it will cost you a lot of money which is not going to be made up with the job you get out of the school. If you want to just become a body/paint person go to a college you will have more respect and higher pay I was told by numerous bodyshops that I was only good for a painters helper at a pay rate ranging from $7.50-$9.00/hr. but I did'nt really want to be a bodyman anyway I wanted to build Hot Rods which I currently do and I am starting my own buisness doing the same and I can tell you that I would not hire a Wyotech grad unless i wanted to train someone for the position but that training would also equal low pay for the employee. I spent a year after graduation trying to get the job I have now it started out with me not being able to find a job with decent pay for two months and then I began work for a well known hot rod shop only to get burger king wages and all of the shit work I could handle unitl one day on a sunday night before i had to work in the morning my boss called me and told me he did'nt need me anymore not because I was a bad employee but because he did'nt trust someone with no Professional knowledge on the subject even though I know I had it from my ten years of personal expierence building my own cars and working on friends cars not to mention the year I spent at Wyotech so again I was unemployed. Three months later after I enjoyed my time off living on unemployment I got a job at another hot rod shop where i basically got the job because I had an interest in the subject not because I had a piece of paper saying I know what I am talking about and i took pictures of any type of work I did which showed that I know what I am doing. what I am trying to say here is that if you want a certain job start reading as many books as you can about the subject and try to practice on your friends cars or yuor own maybe even find someone who can help you or volunteer your time at a shop at night or on weekends to learn and after awhile you will get a job in that field. I know that if I spent the 24,000 that I owe for school on my own tools and the year that I spent in wyoming on just practicing metal work and painting i would be alot farther ahead pay wise than I am now but I am glad that my employer trusted me enough to let me do what I love and pay me for it and I can't complain when a bank bought me this nice house to live in a nice truck to drive and I own my own talon sitting broken in my garage with my other two projects.
