would like to rattle can my side skirts

well just got a 99 gsx in silver but my side skirts are faded and im even missing the piece that goes on the door passenger side so the first thing id like to do is try and rattle can the skirts to match or atleast try. does anyone know what kind of paint i should use as far as brand? who makes a silver that may look just like the stock silver of my car?

i know at my store (advance) we sell a Dupli Color Exact Match paint in spray cans. all different colors for all different makes. get your paint code and go to your local advance and look in the little book that should be hanging right next to all these cans and/or next to touch-up paints. you'll have to get a can of clear too. but you should be good to go

Your paint code should be under your hood on the passenger side fire wall. I think it is also in the door jam but not sure.

I wouldn't do that...it won't look good for long, not to mention its silver which is impossible to match up especially with rattle can single stage paint. Get a new piece for the door. Take it all to a body shop and have them paint it. Even if you need to wait awhile to save up some money to have it done, trust me it will be worth it in the end.

You really don't want to rattle can anything on your car. I have seen it done many times and seen an upset owner many times as well with the end results. You should have a body shop do it, it won't cost as much as you think if you order the paint yourself. If you rattle can anything on your car you can expect peeling, even worse fade, and have to use lacquer to get it off which is not easy. Just be patient and you will be twice as happy with the end result.

I agree. I tried that color match stuff on my front bumper. Even with the correct primer, color, and clear it still didn't match well. And it has a matte finish compared to the car. Wet sanding might help some, but it's off a bit. The paint has faded a bit in 13 years with 244,000 miles.

Not if they're just respraying side skirts that are already off the car.
I'm guessing it would be in the $100-200 range at a place like Maaco, and a little bit more at a better shop. Even Maaco will make it look better than a rattle can job.

yeah i called maaco its $129 per side thats why i was like man maybe i should try rattle caning it i was planing on wet sanding maybe ill try it on the small piece see how it turns out if i like ill de the whole thing if not ill wait i guess..

I don't really see the problem with rattlecanning. If you can accept a less than perfect match, and that its not gonna last more than a year or two its really not a problem. You have to be willing to put in the time and be able to wait for the paint to adhere and cure properly. Do some research for specifics, but you need to scuff it up before you primer, spray the primer, sand, base coats, sand, gloss, sand, then buff it up with some kind of rubbing compound. The sanding paper in the automotive stores even say what step each level of sandpaper is for. As long as you follow the reccomended instuctions on the cans and sandpaper its not that hard. My friend just sprayed his prelude's roof black, came over and asked if i could help him make it look better. He only put 1 or 2 layers of gloss down, so I didn't sand too much off, buffed it with a rubbing compound and its gorgeous. He was just amazed at how nice it looked. Just take your time and do it right. I for one will spend like $40 and spray the areas I want until i can afford a proper paint job for the entire car. Rattle-canned silver done right will look better than white.

yeah i plan on following the steps you mentioned i will take my time im actually curiouse to see how its going to come out..will post pictures as i go.

Sorry, but taking your time and doing it right would be saving the money to have a body shop do it. Or learning how to paint yourself with two stage paint and buffing would be the right way.

not everyone has the opportunity or budget to paint themselves. he can spray can it for now until he can get the car done as a whole just like Aceman said. i've seen whole cars spray-can painted and some of them look pretty decent. you just have to know what you're about and take your time with it. you can't spray it in 30 minutes and expect it to look show quality.

dsm2... just read is basically what you have to do while undergoing this project. it's not hard. just take your time. it'll be wonderful

There is rattle-can paint formulated for automotive use and there are directions and how-to's all over the web. It is up to you to put in the effort and time needed to get the result you desire. Like I said, the downsides are it probably won't match perfect and it probably won't last more than a year or two. If you simply do not have the money to get it done professionally, would you rather have a piece on your car match your paint 90% or 0%? If it takes you 2 years to save up $4000 to spend on a paint job, why not get it as close as you can in the meantime for around $40?

I patched holes on my front bumper and repainted it with the paint match from Orielly, and you can only tell if you are about 6 inches from it. And its not even the paint that gives it away, its the bondo you can see. My paint matched almost perfect and I even fixed some deep scratches in the side with the touch up brush.

you said it the best! rattle can over the way it looks now plus the rest of the cars paint is really nice so for now it will have to do!

You are apparently not very picky about how things look.

He only needs one sideskirt repainted, not the whole car. In fact, the rest of the car looks pretty good, so if you can't do it the right way by yourself, it's stupid to not just spend a few months saving up the $300 or less that a body shop would charge you to paint the damn skirt.

I don't care how much time you put into a rattle can job, it's never going to turn out to be my definition of really good. It's never going to be a kosher way of painting a car, even if it is just one panel.

Go ahead and rattle can your car all you want, but if you ask for my advice on whether or not you should do it, I can't think of a time when I would say "Yes I think thats a great idea." When I bought my car it had the clear coat fried off every panel on the car, it looked like shit. But I drove it that way for nine months while I saved the money to buy the materials to paint it, which I did myself this past summer. Took me three weeks, ~180 total hours of work and cost me ~$1000 in materials. It was all worth it.

Holy shit! People are still paying 4k for paint jobs? Last I checked, which was a couple years ago 4k would get you a Chrome paint job from Alsa Corp! Or even a glow in the dark Paint Job! Hell I have an entire car of HOK Shimmerin Orion Silver and the gallon with couple qts of clear cost 300 bucks new from HOK Distributers. If Paint and body places are gaining that much from doing one car, I'm joining the auto body industry tomorrow morning!

Alsa Corp's basic paints are still better looking than any DuPont or whatever paints I've ever seen, however being the most expensive paints in the world, cheap (for what you get) and dry to the touch almost instantly! which means a normal person can spray their own car for cheap if you know how to spray. Hell I even just made a paint involving DIY Professional Painting.

Cheap paint companies will do an entire car for 3-700 bucks, just bring up a paint code, take off the skirt, have them spray it, it will prob be pretty cheap, last a couple years and look great. Hell do your own prep to make it last longer.

If your goin to rattle can it you might as well go buy a cheap spray gun and get some base and clear. You will be happier with it. The paint will last longer and look alot better. If you where to go the cheapest route and get a paint gun from harbor freight (not that im advising you to) you can be in it for less than $100. You can also go to the pawn shops and look around bet you will find a nice newer gun in there for less than a $100. There was a very nice SATA gun in a shop here for $150. Its a $500 gun. The better the gun the better the job in most cases. Also if you go this route the paint will match better.


We have had 4 show cars/street cars done over the past 4 or 5 years and the cheapest one was 2500. It wasnt that great of a job. The most expensive was 6500 to 7000. It has HOK Kandy Tangirine. There was hardly any body work to be done. All that was done before it went to the paint shop.

I am very picky. I dust my car off every single day. I detail it at least once a week. I have sprayed multiple parts of my car and people ask me if they are brand new. I understand that it can be accomplished on a budget. Just for shits and giggles here is how I keep my car looking on a daily basis.
