Week Before:
If you were following the thread from the last track weekend, you know we had a power steering issue that we weren't able to solve at the track. We finally got it worked out on the Tuesday before, this track weekend. The rest of the week I assembled and checked all the equipment I would need to do some testing.

Friday:
It was a gorgeous day, a little overcast with high clouds, that helped keep the heat down a little. I packed everything up, got the car loaded up and we (Ginger and I) got away, for the track, around 2:30PM. We made the trek to Lancaster something over an hour and a half away, the traffic was not to bad (normally heavy with Vegas runs on the I-15) and checked in our hotel. We went out to track around 5:30PM, I pulled up to the main gate, talked with the attendant, and got permission to go up to the Horse thief Mile track, and set up, if the gates were open, that is. When we got inside the main gate it was so quiet there, no one setting up, no one on the track, very unlike when NASA runs there, and it's always a hustle of cars and people running around. It was kind of eerily quiet, I don't recall, ever seeing the track like this. We made our way up to the track and luckily found that both of the two separate gates were open so we, found a suitable spot, got the car unloaded, truck detached, and all the tent tubing framework setup and ready for the tarp to be added in the morning. We usually leave the tarp off because you always have to be concerned with wind at these desert tracks.

We ate, got back to the room, settled in and I did a final check of things needed for the next day including the palm (I use this to log with) and discovered that it was completely down of battery power. I have installed a program to force the palm to not shut off because it was shutting off during sessions. It must have gotten against something, during the trip, and switched itself on. Upon further inspection I discover that the charger, for it, is in the car at the track. OMG Crap!!! Well I figure if I've lost the Pocketlogger program, at least I have a backup version on the lap top that I can upload back to the pilot. So it's off to sleep, slowly unfortunately, worrying about my logging capabilities for the next day.

Track Day:
Saturday morning, another gorgeous day, we got up early and were at the at gate at 6:30 AM. We were the 1st ones up to Horse thief, by over an hour. I immediately got my palm connected to it's charger. We finished setting things up and no one was there yet, so we decided to head down to Big Willow to check if possibly the meeting was going to be there. Before we got to through the 1st gate, someone was pulling in and confirmed that everything would take place, up here at this track. We turned around and I checked the Palm's progress to discover the screen, just flashing, I left it charging and started doing the car check, fluids, tire pressure, torques, etc., followed by personal gear, helmet etc.. A group of 3 EVO's parked next to us and one of the drivers, Tom, helped us clad our bare tent poles with it's covering, for some much needed shade. I rechecked the Palm and Crap!!!, the start up screen is still just flashing and a soft reset doesn't clear things up at all. So it's on to the dreaded hard reset and the ultimate reloading of the needed software. Well, 9:00AM came and went, the safety crew was running late and the personnel of SST came around and did a quick tech of each of our cars. I got everything loaded back onto the palm, and was trying it out, but it was time for the drivers meeting .

The meeting started and immediately, Sam told us that the safety crew was running late but that SRT would extend that time to the end of the day, because we would be getting all the time, we paid for. He then proceeded to tell us that, this track was pretty feared, and that there were a number of spots that if you lost it, you could end up a 30 plus feet down a cliff, not to mention the end of the back stretch where if you miss the braking point, you could possibly end up all the way down onto the Willow big track. That was comforting:D. He went on to explain that there would be several sessions, and road and drift cars would have separate run groups. He explained that we were to run the track today, in the counter clock wise direction and that this would be better because at least most of the corners would be cambered in our favor. There was some time for questions and answers and then it was back to the truck to check on my Palm. I'm having problems getting the logger to come up correctly and I realize, I haven't put in my registration code, and it's showing as unregistered. I tried to input the code multiple times, but unfortunately, I was not able to get the logger to accept it. So I'm without any way to log, which was one of my major reason for coming, but I'm slowly learning to cope with the difficulties.

The Sessions begin:
The drifters were 1st to hit the track, those guys are totally insane :D . They had the track for 20 minutes, of which, a large portion seemed to be under caution flags of some sort. Someone would lose it and everything would have to halt, while all the loose gravel got cleaned up, and then in a few minutes it would start again. They were certainly a blast to watch though!!

The next group was ours, I got in the car and went through my usual donning of items and it was off onto the track. We made a moderately slow speed trek around the course. It is a really windy course with carousels at a lot of the turns. The next lap it was all out, full speed, at your discretion. I made several laps, learning the line and increasing speed each time, checking instruments when I could, the course keeps you pretty busy. After a number of laps I noticed my EGT was making it over 900C, OMG so it was back in and blindly fiddle with the SAFC with no real direction, on my part. I didn't make it back out for the rest of the session, and then started checking the car and getting ready for the next one.

Our next session, I made quite a few laps a right then left then right, and again I was just soaking up this tight track. In a spare moment, I looked down to see that the temp gauge was showing well over 230 so I came in to give it a little rest, cool down time, and check all the fluids again.

The next session I was pushing much harder but trying to keep an eye on the EGT, along with the other gauges. I made a number of laps and I saw some smoke coming from somewhere in the front of my car, it was only briefly and then I saw it again. So I pulled in to discover that I probably hadn't gotten my hold down spring replaced to it's nitch around the dipstick . There was quite a bit of oil on the underside of the hood and engine compartment, but it didn't take long to clean it up. We did sessions all the rest of the day, with no problems, switching back and forth with the drifters. I was really loving the track, but wasn't able to push things, like I would have liked, because of the EGT. I'm hopefull of being able to convince Scott Grey to do some tuning for me, before our next outing.

Synopsis:
My power steering woes are behind me, and we were able to make a lot of new friends. I didn't get to dial the fuel in on the car, but I really had a super time, at this track.!! I'm also learning to go with the ebbs and flows, of all this, a lot better. You know it just can't get much better than that!

Thanks:
Thanks again for everyone that helps us do these events. A special thanks as always to Dr. Haiavy and Inland Cosmetic, Allied Automotive, David, and last but by far not least, Ginger.

Tom

Sounds like a great time Tom! So glad to hear you've working out the problems with the car. The track configuration looks awesome! What are the elevation changes like, you look to be going up a mountain in some of the pictures? Is it as technical as the "Streets Of Willow"?

Keep up the good work :rocks:

It must have been hotter than snot there last weekend ;)

It was an absolute, super time, Greg. I really enjoyed this track immensely, but then I also like the shorter infield course at Cal Speedway too. :D

As far as the problems with the car and peripheral instrumentation are concerned, it's difficult to know exactly what's happening with these non streetable cars, as I know your well aware of. I charged and rechecked both the laptop and palm several times before departing on Friday. I have spent endless hours trying to make sure things will work as planned, but as we all know, they rarely do :D . As I said above, I'm hopefully, getting a little better at dealing with it all:).

I've not driven the Streets of Willow, so I couldn't comment on the differences, but the track configuration was a total blast for me, and there were lots of elevation changes, with the major change being the last sweeper :rocks: (that would be the one on the top of the map).

We did have some high temps, I'm sure, but I didn't seem to notice it as much this time around. It was just a real relaxed day for me, without the usual post download sessions.

So, hows the car coming along?

:)

Gotta love the rustic shanty town right in the middle of the course. Looks like some old movie set with a racetrack running through it :D

Sounds like a blast, I really want to go to some track days, but my location doesn't allow for that without a very long drive. Good luck in the future and hope you can get it tuned properly. :rocks:

GSTinCO, It was the most fun I've had on a track this year!!! I'm sure we'll get it tuned before we go back out, Thanks!!

I like Durango, we used to go skiing at Purgatory, and I remember the narrow gauge railroad. To bad your in the 4 corners region and not closer to Chris. You might still contact him.:thumb:

Nice writeup! I have that same program on my palm so it doesn't turn off, and like you I've often discovered it to be completely depleted. Since I leave my logger on whenever I drive to monitor various things, I hooked up a DC charger for it to keep it charging while logging, here's what I did:

If you have some extra time and feel like working with some electrics, buy a cigarette lighter charger for your palm (ebay etc.). Then pull apart the plug for the DC charger that plugs into the palm, and figure out which pins are the negative and positive to charge the palm thru the plug. Write them down or draw a diagram so you don't forget. Then cut that plug off the DC charger and strip the wires. Next, open up the plug that plugs into the palm for the logger cable, and solder those stripped DC wires to their corresponding + and - on the logger cable plug (refer to your diagram), and snap the plug back together. You now have one plug that both hooks to the OBD port (thru the interface) and provides power from a DC source. You can then plug the charger into the cigarette lighter, or if you don't have that anymore, which I'm guessing you don't, wire it up to any 12v source. You may wish to solder some kind of additional plug system inline to the DC charger, so that if/when you remove the logger cable from the car you can unplug the DC source. Did that make sense? I just found out that the July 7th event I'm going to next at Streets was cancelled, but I'll most likely be there on the 22nd of July, maybe you'll be there.

That sounds interesting, I didn't realize you could utilize the charging aspect with the logger at the same time. I'll look at this more closely. It wouldn't have helped me out of my situation (not accepting code), but it's certainly a good idea for keeping power to the palm, while on the track.

I take it you were probably going to one of the track days being hosted by SRT. It is unfortunate they're not running again until next year:( . What's going on, on the 22nd?

Yeah, I was shocked when all the SRT events were cancelled. Open track is so much nicer than run groups. The 22nd/23rd of July is a Streets of Willow event hosted by Redline ( www.redlinetrackevents.com ). A lot of people seem to like Redline events, so I probably try it out. I'll be there on Saturday (22nd) unless it's full. Also, did you happen to talk to the owner of that 2g turbo in the pictures? Does he track there often? I don't get to talk to too many road racing DSMers around here...

Tom, I just noticed this, but is that a wrx hood scoop mounted backwards on your hood?

I really enjojoyed the last outing with them, it was a refreshing change.

I think the 2G belonged to one of the STR guy's.

Kyle,

Your very astute, Yes the scoop is a reversed Suby, and I used it because, I had nothing else that would fit that wide of an opening (hole cut for previous scoop). My previous scoop is one of, the one's Greg was speaking of in another thread, regarding a melt down. As a replacenent, I couldn't utilize an RRE carbon fiber scoop, because it wasn't wide enough to cover the hole, from the last one. I plan on replacing the hood with a carbon fiber, at some point, and using a carbontrix, carbon fiber scoop from RRE.

:)

Any idea what lap times you were running? I just dl'ed the American Touge 2 from Best Motoring International and they were running full lap times in the same direction as you guys, at least I believe they were full laps.

Elevation changes? Mountians? Cliffs? Between Greg's and your beautiful pictures of Cali race tracks, I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and come out that way one day. That looked like a fun filled day minus the few hiccups. Thanks for the bed time story!

Kyle,
We wern't watching lap times with so many other things going on, but the seat of the pants meter was pretty high . It just felt really good:D.

I see you're from Houston, I grew up very close to there. That track with the elevation changes and switch backs was a blast. Let me know if you do come out sometime, we'll get together.

Hm. I don't seem to see any DSMtuners.com stickers on that car. Hm.

The car does actually have DSM Tuners stickers on it, they're just not large. They are over the front wheel well.

We'll have to talk to Chris about some larger ones, Eh??:D

Tom do you use a reversed WRX hood scoop as a vent?

Damn I thought I had had an original idea for once.

Sorry, yes, it's a WRX scoop, reversed. I was looking for something that would fit the space, and had a little better chance of taking the heat. I read up on the chemical compound of the WRX scoop and it did have some additives to cope with some heat. The exit for the scoop is a little smaller than I would like, but it did fit the opening in the hood, and has held up so far:D .

:)

Thanks for the offer! There's a growing chance that I may be out there in a year or two depending on my fiance. She has her heart set on doing grad school out in San Diego and we may be visiting sometime over the holidays to check it out.

My woes about flat tracks may also be changing. I cracked open my new issue of Grassroots and who would have guessed, a new track in Ft. Worth. F1 designed, promises of elevation changes, and suppose to be open towards the end of this year. Should be interesting to see when all the driving schools make their way onto the calander for 2007.

HAAHAHAH that'd be the GREATEST MOVIE EVER! :thumb:
