Ive been slowly replacing my clutch over the past couple days and i finally got to put the transmission back in today. That all went smooth however, after mounting the trans I tried to turn the crank pulley (clockwise) and it went almost a full circle then it comes to a stop. it kind of feels like a bent valve is catching the piston but the car was running fine before i took out the trans. Im stumped on what could cause my crank to stop at that point instead of spinning freely. I took the trans, clutch and even the flywheel back off, and it still stops. Any suggestions?

I really appreciate all of your help i believe i got it fixed. i dont know how but one way or another the cam gear was turned and it skipped a tooth or two. while i got my timing cover and belt off im goinna to go ahead and replace the balance shaft belt. the timing belt is brand new but the balance shaft is not. How the hell do i get this crank gear off?

Also antifreeze is leaking from the water pump! Which come to think of it, could have caused the timing belt slip. Is that a b%#ch or what?

Depending on how hard you've turned you may have bent a valve. I'd probably put it back together as is, but if you were anal you'd want to pull the head and get it checked out. It's up to you.

You hold the crank still with a tool Crankshaft sprocket tool and undo the bolt. I made that tool by laying the crank pulley on the piece of metal to drill the holes and ground the rest down until it fit. Sometimes you'll need to use a puller to pop it off, but often it will just come off.

The odd's that water made your timing belt slip are very low, you really must replace the hydraulic piece, tensioner bearing, idler bearing, and even if it's brand new I would replace the belt too. For me, knowing that it's new is worth the $$. I cheap out on a lot of stuff, but timing components its just not worth it.

Turning the engine backwards does put slack on the timing belt. It shouldn't affect things, and it never has for me, but it's one of those why take the risk things.
