Edmonton,
Hey everyone. I'm replacing my turbo so this might not be a really big deal, but I better make sure in any case. Basically, everytime I start my car and start driving, the second I hit boost the something whistles REALLY loud, it sounds like its probably the turbo; I don't know if anything else could make a noise quite like it. The noise only comes when I'm boosting and goes away after a few minutes of driving. Thoughts?

To be sure, check the turbo for shaft play.

Take the intake pipe/hose off and try to wiggle the compressor wheel with your fingers. If it wiggles any more than just a little bit, it may be time to replace soon. If you can look into the compressor housing, see if the fins are bent or chipped. They may be rubbing against the housing.

Also, do a boost leak check just in case there's a leak that's whistling.

Hmmm, say the turbo does blow, it can't really hurt anything can it? I'm going to be replacing it in under a month anyways, so I should probably be good to just leave as-is until I can get the 14b in yes?

Depends on how much the turbo "blows." If the compressor blades are hitting the compressor housing, pieces of them may be breaking off, as happened in my case. Hopefully, no chunks get into the cylinders, but you never know. Besides the seals blowing out and oil getting into the intake and burning (you'll know when this happens), there shouldn't be any other things to really worry about. If you're replacing in a month anyway, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Still, check to see if the compressor wheel is hitting the housing, just in case.
