Which tuning setup do I go with?

Hello guys.
I've been a member here for a while but never did much posting (was always able to find the ton of info anyone would ever need), I've been out of the DSM loop for a few years.

Anyways, I'm just looking for some opinions here. I'm about to pick up a 1g awd (evo16g, rc550's, wally 255, aem fpr etc..) and its running on zero tune and rich as all hell (cant beat the smell of fuel in the morning).

However, first thing I'm going to do is take this baby to a dyno and get some wideband tuning time on 93. I'm quite familiar with how AFC's work, I had one in my s13 back in the day. I cannot afford a standalone or I'd get an Autronic and be done :sneaky:

I guess my question is this: what are your opinions on the AFC vs. DSMLink and other piggyback/logger setups etc? I've been looking over DSMLink and reading threads about them here on the forums and it seems to be the best $600 I could ever spend on the car. I can get a slow laptop to run in my car, it's no problem. I'm looking for more of a cost vs. performance perspective on tuning options :)

Thanks guys, any input is appreciated!

I think EPROM tuning is the best way to tune a DSM, especially a 1g. There is info out there to do just about anything you'd ever want to do with a 1g EPROM. It's actually quite easy to tune. I set the injector size, the afr table, and there's a good baseline tune. It's way easier than tuning even with an afc. DSM Link does NOT give you full control of the timing and fuel maps, which for 500 bucks I think it should give you everything possible for tuning. To me, the sliders seem like a lame way to tune for $500 when you could be editing the actual maps and everything else imaginable for $85 bucks (the price of a BURN1 burner). I got an Ostrich emulator for realtime tuning for a little over $100 on ebay (they are $175 new).

You don't actually need to ever touch a hex editor for basic tuning, you only need to use tunerpro. You use a hex editor when you want to actually change how something works, like if you want to use the purge, boost, or EGR solenoids to control nitrous, meth injection, or a knock buzzer (alarm). If you look around online, you can even find stutterbox, NLTS, cyclone intake control, and other great stuff already implemented that you can use by downloading the bin file and using it in your car. You can even, by following a few simple steps, have wideband support in your ecu (1g); no more stock narrowband or even simulating narrowband with your wideband.

Alright, now it's time for me to take my flamings since so many DSM'ers think Link is the only way to go.

Could always go with ds map. www.ds-map.net Allows you to vent, full afr controls, timing control, injector compensation, rev limit control, studder box, ntls, ebc all types of things all you need is a logger, a laptop, an ostrich chip, socketed eprom, gm iat and a gm 3 bar map sensor.
