Which NGK spark plugs should I use for my stock turbo (will upgrade soon enough) GSX? I've seen 1-step, 2-step, 3-step colder spark plugs. I'd assume that the coldest for turbo would be the best, but I asked my Auto Tech teacher and he said not necessarily because it could be TOO cold and something about the combustion chamber. What do you guys suggest?

Hey man,

If it were up to me I would say if you plan to continue modding, go with the NGK bpr7es. They produce a little bit colder spark then the stock 6's. However, you can go to cold like your teacher said. You have a few mods and you will probably be good running the 6's. If you wish to run a colder spark go with the 7's. Anything more would be overkill and only hurt you.

The spark isn't colder with a colder heat range plug, the heat range is an indicator of the spark plugs ability to transfer heat from the combustion chamber. If you are still at stock or near stock boost level, just stick with the stock heat range.

That depends on boost level, intercooler efficiency, tuning, etc. Most people stick with the 7's, but it doesn't hurt to try the 8's. You'll know right away if you chose a heat range that's too cold, the plugs will foul quickly and the engine will run like ass.

Yeah I know I'm right, and I didn't even have to copy and paste from the NGK site to look like I know what I'm talking about.

Spark plug range isn't so much turbo based as to how much boost you plan on running. For the stock turbo running in the 15-16 psi range the stock 6 range is all that is needed & the 7's will just foul much quicker, giving you worse performance & having to change plugs much more often. If you running 18psi or more once you've upgraded the turbo, then sure go for the 7's but 8 are still over kill for this level. You probably shouldn't even think about running the 8's until your atleast in the 25+psi range.

So if I'm running 17psi, should I go with 6 1/2's? :D
