Which intercooler should I buy?

Hi guys.Well, after wasting my whole day at work looking up info on different types of intercoolers I just can't make up my mind on which one to buy.I'm willing to spend $1000 on the fmic kit.I started looking at the greddy 24r fmic,but there's so many people in the forums that say not to get it.I guess my question would be;If you had a chance to buy a fmic,which one would you get and why?Please just straight answers.Thanks.

I agree, the SBR/ Kinetic Motorsport FMIC is a great kit. I run the race 1g kit, and a personal friend of mine runs the 2g race kit. So complaints from either of us. Fitment was great, and straight forward. Of course, some cutting was required but that's what you get w/ short route piping.

My advice on the Greddy 24R kit. It's been around for A LONG time now, and when it came out, it was top of the line. Since then, there has been many new FMIC designs to come and some are better. I.E. the SBR kit w/ short route piping. The Greddy kit utilizes a pipe that retracts across the top of the FMIC to return the boost, and kinda blocks a bit of its air cooling space, not too much to probably notice, but it does. And for the price of a Greddy kit vs. SBR, and the newer design, it's SBR for me.

If you can get a bit more money to spend, and want the absolute best FMIC available for the 2G, look in to http://dvdtfab.com/2g_intercooler_kit.htm for his custom one off made FMIC kits.

I'm going to disagree here. While the extreme is good core and kit, its not as good as the SBR unit.

Comparison's. The extreme core is 25" long, 10.5" high, 2.8" thick. Decent sized core. The SBR core is 24" long, 12" high, 3.5" thick. This offers a bit more cooling space, and the .8" of thickness really help cool higher boost.

Piping. The extreme kit is regular long route piping. Constructed of more bends, and more area to cover, including more couplers and t-bolt clamps. The SBR kit is Short route, and it a total of 3 pieces of piping. Shorter distance to travel.

Fitment. The extreme kit may be easier to install. If it were, the only reason why is b/c it does not require as much cutting of the inside sheet metal as does the SBR due to its nice short route piping. The SBR unit was VERY easy to install, it bolts right up to your bumper support beams and also to your hood latch for added support.

Pricing. Extreme kit $845. SBR Kit $879. A measly $34 difference for what seems to me anyways, a no brainer.

O.k. let's say that I decide(which I haven't yet) go with sbr kit.Does it bolt right on or is there any modifications I have to do with the bumper and etc..?I was also wondering if this comes with piping all the way to the throtle body,since it asks me for a bov flange setup?Does anyone have pics of what the setup looks like in the engine bay?I have a 2g with a 16g turbo if that helps any.Thanks for the opinion guys.Keep them coming because the sooner I get more of an idea,the sooner I will be making a decision.I feel so anxious though.I feel like I should say the hell with it and buy it now,but I want to make sure I make the right desicion the first time around.

I am sure you will find my opinion biased. So I will stick to the facts.

The kits comes with all piping you need except the J-pipe (for 14b-16G applications). Yes, the piping runs the whole way to the throttle body and does include the throttle body elbow. It also comes with all the couplers and clamps. As far as modifications go you will need to trim your metal bumper to fit the race core. Some people delete this bumper all together. This of course lowers the safety factor. This is up the owner. I will look around our stash here and see if I can find any 2g pics here. Hope this answers your questions.

I don't know for bolt on kits, but we run a few www.extremeintercoolers.com custom kits and couldn't be happier. JR has excellent fitment quality just by what I described over the phone. I have never had any issues with quality or funcionality either. This is up to using an 80lb/min turbo.

I would recommend the victory performance kit. This is what Im running and the kit is amazing. Not the cheepest kit but you get what you pay for. 2.5" powdercoated aluminum pipes, silicone couplers, tbolt clamps, polished cast end tanks. The fit & finish on this kit is second to none. I chose this over the SBR kit because of the pipe routing, the SBR unit takes a direct 90 on the ic outlet so you have to cut a hole through your rad support & relocate the overflow jug. The victory has a nice U bend around the rad core whic is better for airflow. You maybe gain 1 ft on ic pipe but I think its worth it. You can see all the specs at www.victoryperformance.com and I have some pics in my gallery. You'll want the superstreet kit, thats what I run. I've talked to guys that are making ovewr 600 hp using this kit and love it

Don't waste your money on the Greddy kit. The core damages really easily, I believe its tube & fin? and the pipe route is even longer then stock. Also only uses 2.25" pipeing

That's the one i'm gonna get for sure! Just wanna buy the whole thing at the same time from them (turbo, IC, lines, etc) but for now i'm still buying my suppporting mods so there's no reason to buy it right now...

No. They are short route and don;t go through the front quarter panel where the air filter is. They go straight from the back of the ic vertically at and angel towards your TB.

Well, I can agree with a lot of the responses, I love the look of the SBR/Kinetic kit...The problem is, the thing is HUGE...There is one 2g owner here, owns a Blue 95tsi, and he basically cut up his entire front bumper to fit the core....You would definitely need some better slimline fans for the radiator...

With the SBR kit, you could expect to trim a lot of the bumper support like stated...Most people will just end up taking it out and not using (weight savings) while I have heard of people cutting it in half...I could also imagine you would have to cut some bigger holes to fit the 2.5" pipes, and also having to relocate the coolant overflow and PS/A.C lines....
-Some trimming of the actual front bumper would help too, as long as you don't hack it up...

All in all, the SBR/Kinetic 2g kit looks like an amazing piece...Just be aware that the thing is a monster in size so to make it fit and flow well, get ready to do some modding...

BTW that ETS kit is short route too I think

I received mine in reasonable time.

Mine arrived about 3 weeks after purchase. It's a one man operation and albert has classes and things... I understand if it takes him a little while to custom weld and fabricate each kit individually.

When compared to the Greddy piping though it's much closer to short route. It's a shame that they don't do the shorty route piping on 2g's like they do on the 1g kits. Having said that i would have to say go call Slowboy or DVDT fab.

JR at Extreme Intercoolers was a great guy to do business with. Anybody who has asked my opinion on the matter since i picked up my kit i've pointed his way. But I didn't realize the 2g cores didn't have the short route piping.

Either the SBR or the DVDT Fab will definately get the job done for you. Just definately stay away from the Greddy. The piping is incredibly long. I can't believe that they actually designed it like that.
