where to buy a cheap tranny?

if you had a really bad tranny should you buy a new one or rebuild your old one? which way would be cheaper?

I am looking around for a 90awd tranny, They told me they would sell me one for 750.00 and then 50shipping or something like that i forget. They said they also do rebuilds, That would be cheaper then the $750
