Hi guys,
I know these clips go on the shifter linkage somewhere, and I'm pretty sure the car wont shift without them.

I just picked up a 1990 GSX with 130k, needs a timing belt/head job (I'm just going to do a full rebuild). The shifter is sloppy and feels like there are no gears there at all. The cables are connected and the tranny is freshly rebuilt, I can shift it by moving the levers on the tranny. The guy I bought it from said his friend removed something from the linkage that needed to be put back on and it would work fine, but he didn't know what it was.

Well, while I was searching around under the hood I found these little gems, and it all clicked together in my head. :aha: When I pulled the tranny on my other DSM a couple years ago I remember fiddling with these things, but I cant remember where exactly they go. If someone could post a picture or describe where they go in detail, that would be great. Thanks!!!

These clips goes on a shifter cables on a bracket. You put the Shifter cable into the bracket ,and then you will see a grove at the end of a shifter cable, thats the spot where these clips goes on after cables are placed on a bracket

Ahhh ok. It looks like I'm missing the bracket that holds the cables. I have the two bolts and I see where it goes on the tranny, but I'm missing the bracket itself.

Is this holder bracket specific for 1990's?

So I found this on the dsm graveyard... is this what I need to hold the shifter cables to the trans? And the the clips attach to the shifter cables and press up against this bracket?

Thanks!

Yes ,that the bracket that you need, make sure you will get for 90's ,because the bracket from 91 and up is different ;)

So will the shifter not work if this bracket is missing?

Right now I can move the shifter around like there is nothing there. But like I said before, I can put the car into all the gears by moving the levers on the transmission by hand.

My brother (a former DSM nut) said that I wont be able to get it into any gears using the shifter without that bracket because the cables will just flex rather than putting all the pressure on the levers on the transmission, which makes sense to me, but I haven't been able to see what the cables do while I move the shifter. Does that sound right?

I just want to make sure I dont have any other issues going on with the linkage. I'm pulling the motor within the next week or two and I'd like to make sure the tranny works like it should before I take it all apart.

No the trans will not work properly with out those brackets that hold the cables . when you shift gearz both of the cables move to select a gear. you have one cable that moves the gear selector up and down, while the other runs the selector in and out of gear.
